After a booked out Iwi lead walk of Te Kura a Maia (Bowentown Head) and Te Ho (Pā Site) at Waipaopao, we are pleased to announce an encore walk for the 2023 festival. This time we head to Paraparaumu (Shelly Bay).
Reon Tuanau of Te Whānau a Tauwhao will greet you at the lower Waipaopao (Anzac Bay) car park. From here we will make our way to the northern end of Waipaopao, to a track that guides us up and over the hill. During the ascent we get to a junction of several tracks, one that leads to a fishing area, one to the summit, but today we will head straight to our destination of Paraparaumu (Shelly Bay).
Reon will share the area’s rich cultural history throughout the morning. This is a gentle walk, where we will take the time to stop and be enriched with this land’s stories and learn of Mananui, the stronghold Pā that protected the people of Te Whānau a Tauwhao. Reon is an amazing orator and the opportunity to take part in this encore offered walk should not be missed.
Not only will you be rewarded with learning the history of the area, but during the walk you will see stunning views of the upper harbour, Kaimai ranges and coastline.
The walk will conclude when we return to the lower Waipaopao Car park.
