Gold mining history museum and art gallery.

The museum was set up in 1962 as a place for the collection, preservation and display of items of historic importance to the Waihi area and surrounding district.

Gold was first discovered in Waihi in 1878 and by 1905 it was the largest gold mining town in New Zealand.

The museum rooms hold displays of early underground gold mining artifacts as well as displays relating to the social history of the town.

The Art Gallery hosts regular exhibitions of local and visiting arts and crafts. It is available to local community groups for workshops, displays and tutorials for a small fee. School groups can view a Powerpoint presentation in the Gallery when they visit.
