Sport N Action

Sport N Action

Update from Pauline Davies 13 August 2008.

Sport N Action has moved on since initially focusing on establishing networks within the community.

Sport and Leisure Complex

The development of a sport and leisure complex for Waihi is moving steadily forward, all the interested clubs have completed their 'Waihi Community Leisure Precinct Needs' questionaire. All this info has been forwarded to the community planner so watch for further developments.

Activities

Sport N Action has also been involved in setting up several sport and leisure activities with both social and physical aspects.  Random Walks Around Waihi targets all members of our community and is great for those people who want to get out and about to exercise, see some of the countryside, learn about our local environment and history – all without having to join a club.

We have been successful in reactivating the Waihi Beach Junior Badminton, held in the Beach Community Centre every Thursday from 3pm. Friday Night Skating is also due to re-start at the Events Centre with the help from Waihi Inline Skating who have agreed to run this event.

The Echo Walk Fest is something that Sport N Action participates in and helps organise.  This is a great event to get behind as it promotes Waihi as an active community and significant historical and tourist attraction.

Holiday Programmes

Holiday 'sports' programmes have proved popular. Activities have included Basketball, Badminton and Surfing at the beach. We are also currently working on the establishment of a Community Gym in the Events Centre in Waihi - watch this space!

Support for clubs and athletes

Supporting clubs and outstanding athletes in our community is also a major focus for Sport N Action:

  • Promotion of the recent rugby match between the Waikato Air New Zealand Cup team and the Japanese club side Suntory.
  • The Sport N Action Concert held on August 23rd, will help raise the profile of local athletes Christina Syratt and Ian Robinson and also raise funds for their travel to Italy to compete in the Duathlon World Championship Games.
Sportnaction supports anything that gets people up, active and participating in community events.

Working with the community

We continue to work with:

  • Waihi District Health Promoters
  • Active Hauraki
  • Push/Play initiatives
  • Vision Waihi Trust
  • Waihi Community Resource Centre
  • Go Waihi.
