Update January 9

Posted by GO Waihi on 09/01/2019

I’m still not used to, or keen on, these five-day working weeks! A couple of days to get the necessaries done is more me. And I don’t hear too many other people wanting to head back for the five-plus days that they usually do either. We’ve had a run of hot dry days, and hopefully, we’ll have some more for the long Anniversary weekend coming up at the end of the month. Waitangi Day would be good too please, whoever is in charge. Senior exam results are on the way, I hope they are as good as or better than you expect.

Help St John Waihi raise some dollars for their building project by getting along to the Waihi Beach RSA Friday for their Quiz Night. They’ll ask the questions, you just have to correctly answer more than others to win ... easy eh!? Cost is $10 a person, in a team of up to eight, or you can join a shared table. Starting at 7 pm here’s a good night sorted with some great prizes for a good cause.

Every fourth Sunday each month stalls set up in and around the new Karangahake Hall with a mixture of fresh produce, crafts, art and more. There’s always a different mix along with your favourites and it’s always a great way to fill part of your day, browsing for bargains. They’re there from 9 am to about 2 pm. If you’d like a stall phone 07 862 9233 or 07 862 7452.

Get some friends and family together and head to Waihi Beach Dirt Track beside the quarry on Waihi Beach Rd on Sunday for some hot action with classic cars, mini stocks and production cars on the track from 11 am. $5 gets you in with refreshments and toilet available at the clubrooms. The view alone’s worth it, and take an umbrella, a chilly bin and maybe a deck chair for extra comfort on the bank – and sunscreen!

Put a ring around Wednesday 27 March and head for Waihi for the day. If hot rods and classic cars are your thing you’ll be in seventh heaven. And if not you’re well catered for with a good variety of entertainment, bands playing through town, a ton of shops with sales and plenty of eateries to keep you happy. Dress up for the best-dressed competitions for men and women and rock n roll your way through a free day downtown in Waihi with all the Ultimate five-day pass cars from Beach Hop 2019 in town, together with plenty more from around the region and country.

This year it’s on from April 6 to 28 with some amazing walks for all walks of life. There’s a boat trip to Mayor Island, learn about early business owners and settlers with Waihi’s Cemetery Walk, there’s a bike, walk and swim, a nighttime walk checking out the glow worms, the popular Walk Through Waihi’s History is back and there’s even a women’s walk. From an hour to a day, grade 1 to 5, there’s bound to be something to suit you, family and friends. Register online early to avoid missing out. HERE’S A THOUGHT: My New Year Resolution was going to be to quit all my bad habits, but then I remembered, no-one likes a quitter.
