Update March 9

Posted by GO Waihi on 09/03/2018

I’m soaking up as much of the daylight saving as I can, especially when you think it all comes to an end on Sunday 1 April – smack bang in the midst of Easter! It can’t get any earlier. That’s when we’ll see the light of day disappear just after 7 pm. The Ides of March will be here in a few days, with the end of the financial year soon after. Schools are in to the second half of their first term and I guess now’s a good time to wish you well with your winter sports. Trainings are underway and the seasons for netball, football and rugby around our neighbourhood aren’t far off. Remember your warm ups, and something warm for after too. Here are a few things to check out …

Waihi Country Music Club meets on the second Sunday each month, which happens to be this Sunday and Waihi RSA is the venue. The annual club fee is $10 for a single, $15 for a double and $20 for a family. Get along from midday for some great entertainment, they regularly have guest singers, and you can register to perform too. Afternoon tea’s included and there’s just a small entry fee to cover their costs.

Fun’s the name of the game and lots of it for this day! On Wednesday March 21 we’ve got over 600 hot rods and classic cars coming to fill the CBD in Waihi with thousands more lining the bordering streets too. Add 80 plus stalls to go alongside the great selection of goods shops have on sale and plenty to eat and drink no matter what your taste and you are pretty well sorted for the day. Dress up and you could win the Best Dressed Female, Male, Boy and Girl Competitions. Add the Gold FM Drag Race at lunch time, bands playing rock and roll all around town and a relaxed atmosphere and all you need is your camera to enter to win the Panasonic 40” big screen LED TV for ‘shot of the day’.

Actually almost anything goes when it comes to the Gold FM Drag Race. Wednesday March 21 is Waihi’s Warm Up Party for Beach Hop, and that’s when you get to strut your stuff and show off your fashion prowess, or not. Downtown at lunchtime let the race begin with teams of three – guys, girls or guys and girls - dressed for the occasion running up and down the main CBD of Waihi. And they do it for FUN! Well there are prizes but it’s the participation that’s the main thing and the glory of course. Enter a team by getting an entry form from Gold FM in Haszard St Waihi, the Waihi HDC Service Centre and Library in Rosemont Rd or download one at www.waihi.org.nz. Let’s see what you’ve got guys (figuratively speaking)!

Get in touch now if you’d like a stall at Waihi’s Warm Up Party for Beach Hop on Wednesday 21 March. We’re about to close off applications so if you’re keen do it now. Stalls with different products, crafty’s good, to the shops is the idea. We’re gearing up for a busy day with something for all sorts, from car lovers to everyone just wanting a good time. If you’d like a stall we’re looking for diversity, stock the shops don’t have, unique, different, Beach Hop themed maybe … what have you got? Forms are on our website, at Gold FM on the corner of Seddon and Haszard Streets and at Hauraki District Council’s Waihi Service Centre and Library in Rosemont Rd.

A couple of quick updates. Whiritoa Indoor Bowls gets underway on Monday starting at 1 pm at the Community Hall if you’d like to join them. And the Coffee Group meets Thursdays from 10 am, sharing stories and a laugh or two, with full time residents welcoming visitors at the café.

HERE’S A THOUGHT: It’s been discovered that research causes cancer in rats.
