Update March 29

Posted by GO Waihi on 29/03/2018

It’s definitely autumn with a golden glow to some of the leaves (note to self, check rake ready for compost), and daylight saving is about to come to an end. Easter wishes to you and yours, I hope you get to do what you want to safely. Beach Hop has been great and we have some winners from Waihi’s Warm Up Party below and the chance to win a 49” Panasonic Viera LED TV as we see out March and the end of another financial year. Saturday night’s the time to wind the clocks and watch back, and enjoy a sleep in without sleeping in.

POSTER PICTURE POPULAR
The poster for Waihi’s Warm Up Party for Beach Hop has been very sought after. GO Waihi has got some for sale in two sizes, A4 for $2 and A3 for $5. Local artist Mike Morgan’s unique style and portrayal of iconic Waihi structures did us proud publicising our region’s biggest day of the year. Money raised will help with the road closure costs, which don’t come cheaply. Call in to Gold FM, upstairs on the corner of Seddon and Haszard Streets in Waihi to get your piece of memorabilia.

BEST CLASSIC AND HOT ROD WERE …
Congrats to everyone who had a vehicle on display at Waihi’s Warm Up Party for Beach Hop last week. The prize giving was another crowd pleaser with the Best Classic Car Trophy chosen by Hauraki Mayor John Tregidga going to Justin Walker from New Plymouth with his 1964 Ford Galaxie. And the 1933 Ford Roadstar owned by Sean Williams took out the Best Hot Rod Trophy, judged by OceanaGold General Manager Bernie O’Leary.

BEST DRESSED WINNERS SMART & CASUAL
There were so many fantastic outfits at Waihi’s Warm Up Party for Beach Hop the Best Dressed Competitions would have been a difficult job for Miss Pin Up New Zealand Velvet DeCollete to decide who won. Best Dressed Man was Mike Jacobs from Whiritoa who won dinner for two at Waitete Restaurant, Café and Ice Creamery. From Silverdale, Sandra Strickland won a Guess Watch from Diamonds On Seddon as Best Dressed Woman. And Best Dressed Boy Lewis Lehman from Morrinsville, and Best Dressed Girl Olivia Keightly of Dunedin won a pair of sunglasses each from Clarks Pharmacy. To everyone who ‘dressed for the occasion’ thanks.

DRAGGING OUT DRAG RACE A BONUS
After all the dust had settled everyone who entered Gold FM’s infamous Drag Race at Waihi’s Warm Up Party for Beach Hop won a great prize. And the memories linger too, like all the photos. Bragging rights for first past the finish line bras went to Waihi Beach Bakery Hot Cross Bunnies. Just an eyelash or two behind was aptly named Underprepared and Overconfident, with Oceans3 from OceanaGold in third place. Last but by no means least was the Mustang Sallies of Mitre 10 Waihi, who also scored a bonus prize of a bedside radio clock each from 100% Waihi thanks to one team member lacking a bit of rhythm with the hoola hoop. The booby prizes from BananaPepper were a nice bonus for everyone.

THANKS A PLENTY FOR SUPPORT & JOBS WELL DONE
Behind the scenes Waihi’s Warm Up Party for Beach Hop comes together with the help of lots of people, businesses and groups. Sponsors who cover some fairly decent costs are so important for these sorts of events. Big ups to OceanaGold once again, and it was great to have Alton Drilling on board too. Thanks to Hauraki District Council Waihi Ward for your support too. There are the Waihi Lions who man the barriers and make sure everyone’s safe. And the senior Waihi College students who helped us through the day did a great job. Thanks to the Waihi Maori Wardens, Hauraki District Council workers looking after the road closure on the day and Waihi Fire and Rescue on road control. Thank you Marie Marsham and Mary Carmine for beating the feet and Martha Women for some nice muffins. BananaPepper looked after the hot drinks. GO Waihi team members Sara, Max, Kerry, Austin and Glenis helped make things run smoothly, and thanks to Josh who as always covers so many things that need attention without asking. Miss Pin Up New Zealand Velvet DeCollete and Lacey Maddison looking after Beach Hop Central, the best dressed entries and lots more, you’re awesome. And finally a big humungous thanks to everyone who brought their cars to fill downtown Waihi, and to everyone who came along to enjoy another great day, you Rock AND Roll. Let’s do it again, Wednesday March 27 2019, stick it in your diary now.
