Update December 13

Posted by GO Waihi on 13/12/2018

Schools are on their last days, the temperature has risen, hopefully we’ll get the good weather at the right time, still a gift or three to sort, Christmas is looming up and will happen no matter what, ready or not. Then the focus switches pretty quickly to New Year and celebrations to see in 2019 a week later. Guests coming, visiting others, a quiet laid back one or ‘just another day’, I hope things are shaping up for a good break for you. Wrapping paper, sellotape, scissors are at the ready, but the best gift I reckon is time. Family, friends, downtime, you time, recharge time and a little more time to get from here to there with all the extra vehicles needs to come into the equation.

CONGRATULATIONS TO THE FLOATS THAT ROCKED THE JUDGES BOAT
GO Waihi’s annual Christmas Parade with Harcourts Gold Star Real Estate last Saturday had it all. Fine weather, a good crowd and some cool floats. Thanks to everyone who put the time and effort into creating some awesome floats and to the crowd for turning up to cheer them along the parade course. Here’s the list of winning floats from the judge's pens. Best Float went to Hume Pack n Cool Smurfs Christmas with the Most Christmassy being St Joseph’s School. Waikino School’s walking float with a green theme won Most Original and Otawhiwhi Marae Kohanga Reo picked up the Most Kiwi Float prize. Craziest float went to Waihi Fire and Rescue. Waihi Grey Power was full of energy and took the Having the Most Fun category and Waihi Playcentre, Waihi RSA and Waihi Kindergarten combined and won a prize too. Santa said to say thanks for your hospitality and he’ll be back in just over a week on Christmas Eve. A big thanks to all the background workers who make the day run smoothly too.

LIONS MARKET A ‘ROARING’ SUCCESS
Here’s a good place to go, Saturday 15 December for lots of gift ideas. Waihi Lions Market is on in and outside of the Waihi Memorial Hall. Running from 8.30 am to 1 pm there’ll be stalls selling woodwork, crystals, jewellery, home pickles, books, leadlight, engraved glass and the all-important sausage sizzle! For a stall call 022 650 8253.

CHRISTMAS CAROLS SUNG FOR YOU, AND YOU CAN SING ALONG TOO!
Waihi’s Women’s Choir will be entertaining you this Thursday, December 20 downtown in Waihi from 11 am to midday and Friday, December 21 from 6 pm at Waihi Beach town centre. They’ll sing Christmas songs and others so you can hum, tap your foot or sing along and get into the Christmas spirit.

WAIHI ART CLUB SUMMER EXHIBITION’S BACK SOON
Using a variety of mediums from oils and acrylics to watercolours and pastels the artists will show off their talent and versatility at Waihi Beach Community Hall on January 4th to 6th from 9 am to 4 pm. Some will be painting on site and all art’s for sale. They have a ‘Special Challenge Exhibition’ too. A gold coin gets you in.

WHIRITOA GEARING UP FOR BUSY TIME
With summer here and the influx of visitors already starting to arrive Whiritoa is set to entertain you with a number of events coming up. They regularly have a New Year Market, a treasure hunt, a tug of war, tennis tournament, kids quiz comp and more, so once I get confirmation of what’s on and when I’ll let you know.

HERE’S A THOUGHT: Why is the day you do the vacuuming, washing, cooking, cleaning and general housework called a day off?
