Update April 2018

Posted by GO Waihi on 24/04/2018

What a great turnout for ANZAC Day commemoration services around our region on Wednesday. The younger generation has picked up on how important what these young men, and women, did for our country. Another month is about to be farewelled with May here early next week. School holidays are about to end and the weather has been fairly decent for most of them. We’ve got several things on and coming up so get out and support them if you can.

MONDAY’S DEADLINE FOR HDC LONG TERM PLAN SUBMISSIONS
Council is looking at drastically reducing GO Waihi’s funding by a quarter this year and another quarter next year, a 50% reduction in less than two years! If you believe GO Waihi does a good job with promoting Waihi as a great place to live, work and visit then let council know that GO Waihi’s funding should be increased, or at least remain the same. GO Waihi looks after the town Business After 5 Meetings, brings you Waihi’s Warm Up Party for Beach Hop and Goldfest, the annual Trolley Derby, the Christmas Parade and ECHO Walking Festival. GO Waihi does a myriad of things behind the scenes too, assisting any number of businesses, clubs, sports groups, organisations and the like with their events. Town branding, town flags, the town brochure and website … all done by GO Waihi. Either jot a few words down and drop them off at the HDC Service Centre in Rosemont Rd, or go to www.hauraki-dc.govt.nz, click on ‘we need to talk’, and then click on submissions and head to the bottom under ‘general comments’. Submissions close this Monday and GO Waihi would really appreciate your support.

GREY POWER MOVIE MEETING FRIDAY
If you’re quick you might just make it to the Baptist Church on the corner of Kenny and Gilmour Streets in Waihi where they’re screening ‘For King and Country – New Zealanders in WWI’ just after 10 am this morning. This is a 70 minute film covering NZ’s experience of the war, with excerpts from 38 films and a variety of still images. Perfect timing as we remember those that gave their lives. A donation would be appreciated.

ATHENREE HOMESTEAD FUNDRAISING FASHION SHOW FRIDAY
What’s in style, which colours are in, what to wear? Easily fixed questions if you get along to Athenree Homestead in Athenree Rd Friday at 2 pm for their Autumn and Winter Fashion Show. It’ll be a fun afternoon with goodie bags, spot prizes, light refreshments and the latest fashions. Your $20 includes a glass of bubbly or non-alcoholic punch and will go towards restoration work.

GO WAIHI GIVING AWAY A 49” PANASONIC VIERA LED TV, AND THE WINNER IS …

ESSENCE OF MEETING IS ESSENCES
Waihi Herb Society is doubling up this month with their AGM and a very interesting talk on essences this Sunday. You’re welcome to join them at the Salvation Army hall at the top of Seddon St at 2 pm. After their AGM Nina Mayhara will talk about flower essences made from NZ native flowers, bark and leaves and how to make an essence for emotional wellbeing, from trauma to change of life, stress from your job or your personal situation. $3 includes afternoon tea and lots of advice about herbs and gardening in general.

DIRT TRACK ACTION ON SUNDAY
From 11 am through the afternoon on Sunday Waihi Beach Dirt Track has a full programme of races, revving up around their track beside the quarry half way along Waihi Beach Rd, as you head down the gorge. $4 gets you in; a chilly bin, an umbrella, a chair or two, some refreshments, a friend or two and you’re set. And the clubrooms will be open with refreshments too. Take a camera for those moments, and the view!

ECHO WALKING FESTIVAL PHOTO COMPETITION
Thanks if you took part in ECHO Walking Festival over the last few weeks. Some great walks, a bit of local history from the guides (thanks heaps if you lead a walk or two for ECHO), some exercise and hopefully a few great photos too. Have a look through yours and enter them in the photo competition, see our website for details. And good luck with the lucky draws for entrants too. We’ll have some winners for you very soon.
