Update April 11

Posted by GO Waihi on 11/04/2018

I’ve just finished off the last of my Easter eggs, not that I had a lot; I just ate them sparingly of course. A couple of six degree mornings this week have been a reminder to pull in any frost tender pot plants, and to put another layer on! The school holidays are here, it doesn’t seem that long ago it was their summer holidays. Eleven weeks flies by doesn’t it. ANZAC services are coming up on April 25. It’s an ideal time to take a moment to think about and thank those who literally put their body on the line for us. What to do? Check out a few ideas below.

Unfortunately the word is Hauraki District Council is looking at reducing the funding GO Waihi receives. GO Waihi brings you Waihi’s Warm Up Party for Beach Hop, the annual Trolley Derby, Goldfest across October, our traditional Christmas Parade and ECHO Walking Festival (with other groups). We also look after the town website, the town brochure, Business After 5 meetings monthly through the year, Waihi New Zealand’s Heart of Gold town branding, all the flags through downtown, and we also get in behind any number of other activities and events, groups, organisations and businesses to promote Waihi as a great place to live, work and visit. We’re asking people to put a few words down on paper and send it in to Hauraki District Council or get on their website www.hauraki-dc.govt.nz to make a submission and ask council to increase GO Waihi’s budget, which hasn’t had a decent rise in over 10 years, and support this town nonprofit incorporated society. Just a few minutes for your support would really be appreciated. Deadline is Monday 30 April. Stay tuned for updates.

The winning photo in GO Waihi’s Snapshot Photo Competition is on to a good thing, a 49” Panasonic Viera LED flat screen TV. The idea is to look at your photos from Waihi’s Warm Up Party for Beach Hop and select some that show off Waihi, the vibe, the action and the atmosphere. Send them to GO Waihi at info@waihi.org.nz – one photo per attachment and one attachment per email (saves clogging up the emails). Or stick them on a memory stick or disc and post them to PO Box 34, Waihi, 3641, or drop them off to Gold FM upstairs on the corner of Seddon and Haszard Sts. The deadline is this Monday at 5 pm, good luck. The winner will be announced on Monday 30 April.

The road closure for Waihi’s Warm Up Party for Beach Hop comes to almost $5000 by the time GO Waihi pays Hauraki District Council and gives donations to other nonprofit organisations who assist with this. You can help us cover these costs and get a little memorabilia by buying the very popular poster. We have two sizes available; the standard A4 is just $2 while the larger A3 is only $5. Head to Gold FM, upstairs on the corner of Seddon and Haszard Sts and get yours, and one or two for some friends.

We can’t be clearer than that. The walks so far have been very popular and some on our lists are fully booked. Check out echowalkfest.org.nz for all the walk descriptions, times, difficulty, what you’ll see, where to meet … all the details. Then book on line while you’re there so it’s all done! Waihi has the Karangahake Loop with Lunch and Vino - grade 2 – 3, great for the kids are Owharoa Falls and Victoria Battery, and We’re Going On A Bear Hunt Not, both grade 2. And for the more adventurous try the grade 3 – 4 Waihi Stream Loop Track. And the Waikino Arts Trail Wander and Duncan’s Dairy Farm Walk are only available during ECHO and are both grade 2 walks. Remember grade 1 is easy, grade 5 … not that easy! All walks are guided and free except for any travel costs.

Join them if you can … at the Whiritoa Coffee Club Thursday mornings from 10 am at the local café. Also the Patchwork and Sewing Group meets on the 1st and 3rd Wednesday each month in the Community Hall, call Christine about times on 07 865 6656. Indoor bowls is every Monday in the Community Hall from 1 pm and they have social tennis club days every Tuesday and Thursday from 9 am if you’d like to join them.
