We’re into Autumn officially after the solstice a few days ago, and hopefully a little more of the weather we’ve had for the last week plus. The wet’s definitely part of the picture, but hey, the temperatures are still pretty comfortable. We’ve kicked off Beach Hop again with a great day in Waihi and I hope the rest of the festival goes well. It’s a huge thing for the whole Coromandel and interest in the 50’s and 60’s definitely spans the generations. Rock and Roll On!! And enjoy this last weekend of Daylight Saving eh!
FOOTBALL OPEN DAY FOR YOUNGIES THIS SUNDAY
Waihi Association Football Club is inviting children from 4 upwards along with their parents and caregivers to their Junior Open Day on Sunday from 1 pm at Morgan Park. There’ll be a free sausage sizzle, some football activities and you can find out what they have planned. It’s a good chance for the club to gauge interest too.
RUN WAIHI WORTH A THOUGHT
This group meets each Saturday at 8 am ready to head off around 8.15 am round the Martha Mine Pit Rim, about 5 kms. A hill or two, a few downhill stretches and some fantastic views of the mine along the way. Fast or socially, it’s up to you. Meet just below the Pumphouse in Seddon St ready to run and with something to cool down in afterwards. They quite often catch up for a cuppa or coffee. And dogs on leads are welcome too I hear. There’s no cost but time.
ECHO WALKING FESTIVAL STARTS NEXT WEEK
40 plus walks of varying length and difficulty means there’s bound to be something suitable for everyone. Parents with pushchairs, folk forwarding streams, climb aboard the Goldfields Railway, plant a tree, climb a mountain; spend an hour stretching your legs, learn about Waihi’s history, cross private land not open to the public any other time and listen to the guides on every walk. There you go, now it’s up to you. Head out and grab a brochure available in lots of shops, and go to ECHO Walking Festival to read full descriptions and register. It’s on from April 1 to 23. Challenge yourself and some friends.
WERE YOU AT WAIHI’S WARM UP PARTY FOR BEACH HOP?
If you took any photos there check to see if there are any good enough that feature a little of Waihi and you could be the proud owner of the Panasonic Viera 40” big screen LED TV we’re giving away. Not a lot of rules – it’s open to amateurs, must feature something of Waihi and our Warm Up Party for Beach Hop 2017, you’re limited to 6 shots maximum, you’re happy for us to use them on our website etc and they’ve got to be with GO Waihi by April 18. Email one at a time to us, put them on a stick or CD and post them to us, or drop them off to Gold FM before the deadline. Judges decision is final. There’s a good reason to sort out your best pics.
WAIHI DRAMA SOCIETY’S LATEST IS A DOOZY
The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe gets steampunked. What a great idea. Tickets are reduced to $15 for adults and $10 for youngies, and you’re invited to dress for the occasion too. A big cast, some fantastic costumes and props and C S Lewis’s classic tale is ready for another generation along with the old. Two matinees and several evening shows start next Friday March 31 with the season ending on Sunday April 9th. Tickets are at Waihi i-site and on line at www.waihidrama.co.nz.
AND NEXT WEEK …
We’ll have a bit of a wrap up of Waihi’s Warm Up Party for Beach Hop. You know, the Best Hot Rod and Classic Cars, Best Dressed male and Female, boy and girl, all the inside info on Gold FM’s Drag Race and some big thank yous to those that made it all happen.
HERE’S A THOUGHT: The old know more about being young than the young know about being old.
