The best of the festive to you and yours from the GO Waihi team. It’s a hectic time, whether working through or planning a break, so take a little ‘you’ time and enjoy. The longest day has been and gone, just. The countdown’s on with just a few days to 2018 and the New Year celebrations. Hopefully 2017 has been good for you and heading into the New Year you set yourself some achievable goals, or call them resolutions. That way you feel good when you do tick those boxes. Let’s check on some of the things coming up in the not too distant future.
WHIRITOA NEW YEAR MARKET A MUST DO
This one’s always popular, and a great way to kick off the New Year. You’ll be supporting the Whiritoa Surf Club with any purchases you make and it’s a great time to browse the good mix of stalls selling fruit and veggies, plants and lots of crafts. It starts at 9 am and runs until early afternoon. If you’d like to have a stall quickly contact Wendy at firstname.lastname@example.org.
WHIRITOA SUMMER HOLIDAY PROGRAMME INCLUDES …
Try your hand at the Sand Sculpture Competition this Wednesday, December 27, the Big Dig Treasure Hunt on Thursday and there’s the kids Quiz Night that night too. There’s the Tennis Tournament on Friday 29th and the Battle of the Streets Tug of War on Saturday 30th. New Year’s Eve at 3 pm there’s a Scavenger Hunt too. I’ll check out more that’s on in Whiritoa next week.
WAIHI ART CLUB EXHIBITION BESIDE THE SEA
Whether the weather’s wet of fine, hot or cooler, this event won’t be affected. It’s a good opportunity to see what the Waihi Art Club’s been up to through 2017. Their annual Summer Exhibition is on from 9 am to 4 pm at the Waihi Beach Community Centre on Friday January 5th to Sunday the 7th.
There’ll be a variety of styles and subjects to suit a mix of tastes, and it’s all for sale too! A gold coin donation at the door is the only cost and the artists theme this year is an interesting one – Fakes and Forgeries with a Twist.
ECHO WALKING FESTIVAL 2018 SHAPING UP NICELY
We have an update from the ECHO Walking Festival team, and they’re not far away with the list of walks for 2018 going up on a new, refreshed website. The dates run from April 7 to 22, and there are some interesting new walks this year, based from the Coromandel to the Kaimai Ranges. From those who are keen on short walks, to the more adventurous who like to stretch the legs a little more, I think you’ll be pleased with the mix of walks around our back yard. Some are only available through the event as they go across private land, so make sure you check out the website www.echowalkfest.org.nz in the new year once the ‘new improved’ website is up and running. I’ll let you know when it’s up and running, or should that be walking with this festival.
ART WAIHI ANNUAL EXHIBITION LOOKING GOOD
Pastels, watercolours, acrylics and oils; now there’s a mix of mediums. Art Waihi has their annual Exhibition featuring all these coming up at Waihi Memorial Hall on Friday January 12 to Sunday 14. On each day from 10 am to 4 pm you’ll be able to watch artists at work, have a chat to them, and browse the works that are all for sale. There will be demonstrations of beautiful mosaic work by J J Jones and Pauline Goodwin, and Shirley Killick will have a selection of her colourful paintings on display too. All art is for sale, and a gold coin donation at the door will help them cover the cost of the hall.
BEACH HOP AND DAY ONE IS ON IN WAIHI MARCH 21
A quick heads up that Wednesday 21 March is Day One of Beach Hop, New Zealand’s favourite event. Waihi hosts this day and likes to turn on a fun day for car enthusiasts and all visitors and locals with a variety of things to see and enjoy. Hundreds of hot rods and classic cars take over the town centre, Gold FM has the now (in)famous Drag race at lunch time through the centre of town and there are a ton of shops and stalls with sales and specials ready to wow you. Add a fantastic mix of eateries to take away those hunger pangs and you’ve got a great day. Dress for the occasion and you could win the best dressed male or female competition. Here’s your invite, RSVP’s not required, just turn up and enjoy the fun and excitement.
HERE’S A THOUGHT: First rule of tinkering with those new tools, games and gadgets, save all the parts.
