Update December 21

Posted by GO Waihi on 21/12/2016

We wish you a Merry Christmas, we wish you happy holidays, we wish you a great New Year and a brilliant 2017. Right, I think I’ve got it covered, although good health and great friendships are nice to add. Here we are at another Christmas, and the wishes vary depending on what you’re up to, holidays for some, working through for others. Whatever you’re doing I hope you get to enjoy a bit of you time. We’ve got so much within our arms reach to enjoy, and lots are here or coming here to enjoy what we like to think of as our backyard. Respect it, enjoy it and let’s keep it pristine for generations to come. Thank Santa, help your hosts, leave nothing but good impressions and let’s be nice human beings to each other … wouldn’t that be a dream come true.

NEW YEAR AND IT’S OFF TO MARKET
Whiritoa always kicks off the year with a great Market and you can count on lots of treats, treasures and one or three trendy people. Trendy or not they welcome one and all to the surf club for a mosey around about 40 stalls, food and refreshments included, as they raise funds for the local community. A great setting with cash the word of the day, and fun! Starts at 9 am and ends around 1 pm.

AN IDEA OR THREE FOR THE SPARE MOMENT OR TWO
Get the walking shoes on and take a kilo or two off with a walk around the pit rim of Martha Mine. An hour and a half should do it, with time for a few photos – there’s something unique to take home. Victoria Battery is full of history, more than you realise. About 8 k’s from Waihi in Waikino you can park right alongside; give yourself a couple of hours to really get acquainted with the site. And don’t forget to visit Waihi Art Centre and Museum in Kenny St, for a good look at the history of one of our country’s older communities, Waihi.

BIKE IT, RUN IT, WALK IT, SHARE IT – EXPERIENCE IT
The Hauraki Rail Trail is there for all to enjoy and to enjoy it all, and being a grade 1 that’s very achievable. Give it a go, take a friend, or two, or the family and maybe the train back the other way. That’s the Goldfields Railway train, the one everyone toots at along SH2 while those aboard wave that travels between Waihi and Waikino railway stations several times a day.

RELAX, TAKE A STROLL, FEED THE DUCKS, WATCH THE BOATS
All this can be done at Gilmour Lake in Waihi. Model boat enthusiasts meet regularly there with some amazing craft. The children’s playground is a great draw card, and the stroll around the lake takes about 20 or so casual minutes. Plenty of shady spots for a picnic could lengthen your stay. Take a Frisbee, a ball and maybe a bat and a hat, and remember the sunscreen. Where would we be without the sunscreen?

ART YOU ASK? WE CAN CATER FOR THAT TOO
It’s our pleasure. Let me introduce you to Waihi Art and their Summer Exhibition. Head to Waihi Beach Community Centre between Friday 6th and Sunday 8th January between 9 am and 4 pm to see artists at work, art for sale, and a variety of painting styles to just look at. A gold coin will do it to get in, and this year’s theme of Tropical Scenes will add to the flavour.

SHOP AND RELAX IN WAIHI’S MALL WITHOUT WALLS
Boutique shopping is what it’s about, along with good old fashioned service. Food and refreshments are well taken care of with well over 20 eateries to suit most tastes within four blocks. Want a gift to say thanks, forgotten to bring something on holiday, just see something you like? Park in town for FREE, yes free. Enjoy the atmosphere so close but far enough away from ‘the big smoke’, and one of our nearby beaches is well worth a visit too.

FROM GO WAIHI - A FINAL WORD, OR WORDS REALLY …
Take it easy over Christmas, on the roads, at home or visiting friends and places. Look after your mates, friends and family, even that person you haven’t met yet. Take a look at our town brochure, Waihi New Zealand’s Heart of Gold, check out our website www.waihi.org.nz and make some memories that’ll last a lifetime. The best’ve the festive to you and yours. Catch you next week with some ideas to wrap up the year and kick off 2017.

HERE’S A THOUGHT: Funny how when you get what you want, you don’t want it as much anymore.
