Update December 1

Posted by GO Waihi on 01/12/2016

And here we are at the tail end of 2016, and so quickly time has passed us by. We really must be enjoying ourselves if the old saying ‘time flies when you’re having fun’ is true. Senior school exams are over, and the rest of schools will be off soon too. Countdown to Christmas has begun and Santa’s one of the busiest people on earth with pre-visits for Christmas Parades galore on at the moment. Spring like weather persists but for how much longer? And remember to lock the door on your way out ... always worth a reminder!?

That’s the way I see it next Saturday, December 10, in Waihi with the annual GO Waihi Christmas Market Day from 9.30 am. We’ve got some sounds sorted for outside Waihi Memorial Hall, lots of stalls adding to the sales and specials with the shops, plenty of raffles with Waihi Lions and a ton of food and refreshments for most tastes through town. Add lots of people with smiles and that Christmassy feel and we’re set for a great Market Day. If you want a stall, you’d better hurry and get in touch with GO Waihi. And keep an eye out for Santa, apparently he’s arriving early and going incognito around town before the parade at 1 pm.

I spoke with Santa the other day and he’s so excited. He’s set for a good time as usual in Waihi and wants to see you either on a float or watching all the floats go past with the GO Waihi Christmas Parade with Harcourt’s Coastal Realty Waihi next Saturday, December 10, starting at 1 pm. Get yourself a good spot to watch all the floats and action with your family and friends, and remember to keep an eye on the youngies so they’re safe. And no, it’s not too late to enter a float, the more the merrier Christmas. Get a registration form from GO Waihi, Gold FM, or HDC’s Service Centre and Library in Rosemont Rd ASAP!!

You’d better be quick if you’d like a stall on Tuesday 3 January at Whiritoa Surf Club. Cut off was 30 November but they might let you in if you’re super quick. It’s a fun event with about 40 sites and they’re only $25 each. Call Fay on 07 864 7451 or Lynnie on 07 865 8443.

Ohinemuri Singers are performing a selection of Christmas songs and carols at the top of Seddon St at Waihi’s Salvation Army Hall from 6.30 pm. And yes, you’re welcome to sing along too. It’s $5 per adult and children get in for free. You’ll also enjoy ‘A Carol for a King’, a Cantata including narration and songs of the Christmas story. All up you’ve got over an hour and a half of great Christmassy entertainment. Warm up your tonsils and get along.

The Waihi Masonic Lodge Annual Garage Sale next Saturday, December 10, starts at 8 am on Kenny St, by SH2 (Rosemont Rd). They’ve got all sorts of things for you to browse and buy. All the funds raised are used on local community projects so support them if you can. And if you have something in good nick you’d like to donate, call them on 07 863 7574 and they’ll happily add it into the mix, ready for another good home.

If you’ve got something on over the next two or three months, let GO Waihi know so we can add it into the mix of things to see and do. Our website is regularly checked by locals and visitors. Who, what, where, when, how much and who to contact for more info is a good start. We also like to spread the word through our column in the Hauraki Herald. Here’s a good example, the Waihi Art Club Exhibition on from Friday 6 to Sunday 8 January at Waihi Beach Community Centre from 9 am to 4 pm. All the art’s for sale, it’s just a gold coin entry and there’ll be artists working each day.

HERE’S A THOUGHT: If your dog’s overweight, you know you’re not getting enough exercise.
