Here we are into double figures for August already, and a colder day or two under our belt. “Nippy, chilly, refreshing” are a few descriptions of the icy starts earlier this week, oh yes, there were a few others which described it fairly well that I haven’t included due to the family nature of this column! We’ll be into another season before you can say ‘Merry Christmas’ ... I hope. I’ll be looking at hitting the beaches again pretty soon, just maybe not the water, unless there’s a decent swell of course. Aren’t we lucky with our backdrop of countryside, from beautiful beaches to fantastic bushwalks, and boutique shopping to boot.
DOWN TO THE BUSINESS OF BUSINESS HOUSE SQUASH
A great game, good for fitness and lots of fun, Business House Squash with Waihi Squash Club starts today. Teams of four, two members and two non members of any experience, or enter as an individual and get teamed up, the choice is yours, if you hurry. It’s $40 a team or $10 a person and the season runs through to mid September. Last minute entries should contact Dot on 027 689 7429 or email email@example.com.
GOLDFEST GETS MORE EVENTS BOOKED IN
GO Waihi says ‘keep ‘em coming’! Events are coming in for Goldfest through October and there’s room for more. Art Waikino is back, the iconic art exhibition across Labour weekend. We’ve just heard about a Vegetarian Festival and will keep you up to date with that, and of course there’ll be things for the kids to do through the holidays, and adults too. We’ll have more information about several plays being put on in October, all on the same night too. And of course we’ll have some fun with the GO Waihi Trolley Derby and Market Day too. If you want to hold an event send whatever info you have so far in to GO Waihi and keep us in the loop and we’ll add it into the programme. Contact details are below.
FAMILY NIGHTS A CHANCE TO TRY IT OUT AND HONE YOUR SKILLS
Waihi Drama Society has these on the third Friday each month, so the next one’s coming up next week, August 19. You can develop your performance skills and confidence in a relaxed, supportive and fun atmosphere. Take along a pre-prepared skit, do some reading, dance or perform a musical item. Take part in script reading or improvisation games or just get along and be an audience member. Everyone’s invited from 7 pm to 9 pm at The Boyd Rd Theatre and it’s just a gold coin to help with the refreshments.
MARKET DAY STALLS AVAILABLE OCTOBER 8
As part of Goldfest and the annual Trolley Derby GO Waihi is having a Market Day on that Saturday and there’s room for some interesting stalls to add to the flavour through town. If you’re a regular stall holder, part of a club fundraising or an individual that wouldn’t mind making some money with different products than the shops, get in touch with GO Waihi for an application form, or download one from our website. Inexpensive, fun and profitable are all good reasons to follow up on this one.
WHIRITOA FIRE FORCE FAMILY GROWS
With three new personnel the Whiritoa Fire Force are always after more members to help a very important part to the community. Last year they were called out 21 times to fires, motor vehicle accidents, medical alerts and their famous cat up a tree rescue. Their new fire truck is performing well and the crew are doing their annual hose testing on Wednesday nights. Be part of the team, contact GO Waihi for who to get in touch with.
WWWW = WAIHI (on the) WORLD WIDE WEB
There’s always something on, something coming up and some things in the wind around Waihi. Lots of these things feature on our website, and in my column in the Hauraki Herald too. Keep sending us your information and we’ll let everyone know what’s happening, where and when. We’re a great way of letting folk know what’s happening, and our website gets lots of visits from both visitors and locals.
HERE’S A THOUGHT: Have we learnt from our past, or just about it?
