Update April 1

Posted by Go Waihi on 01/04/2016

First up a pinch and a pat on the back for the first of the month and it doesn’t rhyme. Well we had a bit of fun at Waihi’s Warm Up Party for Beach Hop on Wednesday, with lots enjoying a good day. More below on this one. And so endeth the Daylight Saving. Yes, Sunday sees the job of rewinding of watches, clocks, car clocks, clocks on stoves, clocks on bedside alarms and possibly a phone clock too back an hour. Hey, the extra hours’ sleep has to be a bonus. But I’ve got to say I’m going to miss the afternoons! I hope you had a fantastic Easter. ANZAC Day is the next official long weekend, and then it’s Queen’s Birthday.

THANKS IS WELL DESERVED
I’m likely to miss someone out but we’ll do our best to say a big thanks to a bunch of people and businesses that really deserve it. Waihi’s Warm Up Party for Beach Hop with GO Waihi brings a lot of people together behind the scenes that make the day happen. To the sponsors OceanaGold, Thiess Global Mining and Hauraki District Council and Gold FM, thanks. Also Waihi Lions and Waihi College Senior students and the individual volunteers, you kept the wheels turning nicely. The HDC crew who looked after the road closure, you’re awesome. Well done to the Gold FM Drag Race teams, you’re always a crowd pleaser. To everyone who came for the day, we hope you enjoyed yourself. A big thanks to all the car owners who came to Waihi and showed off your cars. And to the Beach Hop team we hope you enjoyed another rock n roll day in Waihi. See you Wednesday 22 March next year.

ANOTHER BIG UPS OR TWO
The town support has been fantastic for our Warm Up Party for Beach Hop in Waihi and without this support days like these just don’t happen. My thanks to everyone who donated time, money and prizes towards the cause. To Ti Tree Cafe, The Sterling Tavern, 2nd Cup Cafe, Waihi Pizza, Mitre 10 Waihi, Kava Bar & Cafe, Subway Waihi, Thai Lemongrass Restaurant, Hong Kong Takeaways, Quartz Cafe, Gevadi, USA Streetwear and Tandoori Chambers Indian Restaurant, thank you.

You dragsters did it again, good on you. What a show, literally! Thanks heaps for the photos, the laughs and memories ... kinda. Good one BananaPepper with your hot crossed buns and hot drink for the volunteers and the ‘booby’ prizes for the drag race. And to Diamonds On Seddon and Waitete Restaurant, Cafe and Icecreamery your continued support is appreciated.

DID YOU GET ANY GOOD PHOTOS?
There’s a Panasonic 40” big screen TV to be won with GO Waihi. Waihi’s Warm Up Party for Beach Hop had the cameras out. Check what you managed to shoot and see if it catches the judges’ eye by entering it in the GO Waihi Snapshot Competition. What shows that Waihi angle? You have until Friday 15 April to enter your best shots. Judges decision is final and this is open to amateur photographers. Send your best to info@waihi.org.nz, one at a time please, post them on a disc to PO Box 34, Waihi 3641, or drop them off to Gold FM, upstairs on the corner of Seddon and Haszard Streets in Waihi. Remember to include your contact details and good luck.

FAMILY NIGHTS NO DRAMAS
Waihi Drama Society’s introducing their Family Nights on the third Friday each month. Held at The Theatre in Boyd Rd between 7 pm and 9 pm it’s an open invitation to join them. Take something prepared, a dance, a reading or musical item, or take part in script reading and improvised games. What a good way to develop your performance skills and confidence, in a fun supportive atmosphere. A donation towards the refreshments is all it takes.

SUNDAY BIRTHDAY CAKE AND KIDS
There are activities for kids, cake and coffee too and the opportunity to meet the folk who put together packs of clothes for those who need them. It starts at 2 pm and is at the Waihi Memorial Hall. Any donations of children’s and babies clothing would be welcome.

ECHO 13 TIMES NOW
That’s the number of years this event has been running, and it keeps getting people back, with more joining in and finding out a bit more about our neck of the woods. From a short stroll with the family to an over the hills and beyond mountain climb, I think there’s something to suit most tastes. All guided they are free apart from any travel costs of course. Brochures have full descriptions and you can see the same and register on the web. Just go to www.waihi.org.nz and follow the link. Bookings are busy so book now, and enjoy then. Take a camera for the photo comp.
