Update October 15

Posted by Go Waihi on 15/10/2015

First up, roll on Labour Weekend, I’m looking forward to a bit of extra down time, and I bet I’m not the only one. We can expect the roads to get busy, town to have the car parks taken and we’ll get to meet a bunch of people who haven’t realised this is a great place to live, not just visit. School’s back in for the last term and the shorts are out, just not on at my place but the thought’s there. Let’s look ahead at what’s coming up with Waihi’s Goldfest with GO Waihi and Thiess Global Mining across October, and further.

MALL WITHOUT WALLS PLUS STALLS TOMORROW
Waihi Lions Market Day downtown Saturday is on from 9 am into the afternoon, in the Waihi Memorial Hall and through Seddon St. There are all sorts of stalls and always something different, with who knows what for what sort of price. The shops are all open with sales and bargains, super specials and that town with a heart of gold service. You can park for free, there’s no time limit and if you’re hungry, not a problem with variety the word on everybody’s lips. See you there.

MURDERS & MISHAPS CEMETERY WALK
They’re a genial bunch the Waihi branch of the New Zealand Society of Genealogists, and they welcome you to join them tomorrow at 3.45 pm at the Waihi Cemetery gates for a walk at 4 pm, a walk and talk about the above. Sound interesting? It’s free, with a bit of local history which has got to be good for you.

NOW FOR LABOUR WEEKEND, 1ST UP - THIS IS NOT TO BE MISSED
Heartlanders: New Zealanders of the Great War Travelling Museum Exhibition. The National Army Museum’s taking this around the country and Waihi’s lucky to have them here on Labour Weekend Saturday 24 October. It’s our history of a hundred years ago with life size models, original film footage and stories of survivors and those who fell, a very powerful experience you should experience. Visit them at the car park next to the Salvation Army in upper Seddon St. On from 9 am to 4.30 pm, this is FREE!

ACROSS THE LONG AWAITED LONG WEEKEND
Art Waikino hosts their 15th annual Art Exhibition. Friday night you can meet the judges and find out the five category winners, and just $10 includes wine and cheese. Then Saturday to Monday from 10am to 4 pm browse, peruse, enjoy and even purchase the art on display. Art, photography of people, photography of other than people, craft and sculpture should keep you busy, and it’s not expensive to visit. Funds raised keep the hall in good nick.

ARTIES SPOILT FOR CHOICE LABOUR WEEKEND
Grab a map from around town and on our website and head out on Waihi’s Creative Art Trail with Waihi Art Centre and Museum. Check out 17 plus venues await you with weaving, painting, sculpture, abstract art, embroidery, photography, tattoo art, print making, garden art, pottery, life drawing all included as you wend your way around Waihi, Waikino and Waihi Beach. Take your time with a tea, coffee and some refreshments at the cafes, bars and restaurants along the way. Hands on demos, classes and a musical performance are all included.

AND AT THE BEACH OVER THE LONG WEEKEND
It’s on Sunday not Saturday the Big Beach Dig with the Waihi Christian Centre. From 1 to 12 year olds can have a go, it’s free and a lot of fun. Meet in front of the Waihi Beach Surf Life Saving Club for a start at 2 pm SUNDAY. And Whiritoa Rural Volunteer Fire Force’s Annual Car Boot Sale and Sausage Sizzle is a great way to start your Sunday. 9 am to 1 pm they’ll be at the Whiritoa Community Centre. Add in the Book Sale and raffles and you’re helping this important part of the community keep ticking over. Nice one!

189, 275, 227, 166 or is it 300 and something? All will be revealed in next week’s update with the Goldfest Guess the Number of Crunchie Bars Competition with GO Waihi and New World Waihi. There’re $100, $75 and $50 vouchers for the three closest guessers thanks to New World Waihi and the bragging rights of getting it right goes with them too. All we have to do is go through the thousands of entries to find the winners ... great!

WAIHI’S CHRISTMAS PARADE DATE SORTED
Santa says he can’t wait; the float entry forms and stall application forms are out. Add in a nice big crowd to enjoy the atmosphere, the entertainment through the Market Day, super bargains, sales and specials and food and refreshments to suit all sorts of tastes and you’re set for GO Waihi’s Christmas Parade with Harcourts Waihi.
