Update May 14

Posted by Go Waihi on 14/05/2015

It’s nice to know at this time of the year we’re still using the beaches and outdoors. I managed to get out and about a bit last weekend and really enjoyed seeing so many people, locals and visitors, living and loving our back yard. It’s just a hop, skip and a jump away from the hustle and bustle of the big smoke, and don’t they know it. Add in lots of extra things to do like The Nugget Multisport event and Junior Survivor Challenge for the kids in Waihi last weekend and you see what our neighbourhood has to offer. Lots more where that came from plus no congestion, pristine backdrop, everything you need within reach, great surf and beaches and the bush is primo. Just don’t mention the excellent value for properties of the quarter acre variety eh!

AGM FOLLOWED BY BREAKING DOWN THE BRICKWALL
It’s business first with the AGM of the Waihi Branch of the NZ Genealogists on Wednesday May 27, and then it’s hit the ‘brickwall’ time. To the uninitiated like me that’s where you’ve come to a dead end with your family research. See if someone can help break down the brick wall, take along what you’ve got and you never know. Meet at the Waihi Bridge Club Hall in Union St for a start at 1 pm. Remember $3 to help with costs and I’m sure there’s a brew in there too.

BOOKS, MORE BOOKS, KEEP THEM COMING PLEASE & THANK YOU
The countdown’s on for Waihi Lion’s Book Fair on Saturday and Sunday of Queen’s Birthday Weekend. Sorting’s happening with categories for non-fiction and also authors for the fiction section, so the earlier the Lions get the books the more sorting they can do before the day. Any donations would be gratefully appreciated. Games and puzzles are good too, and they’ll take music too. Drop off points are at Home Hardware at Waihi Beach, at Mobil Waihi in Seddon St and BP Connect in Waihi and the Caltex Service Station in Paeroa. And thanks if you’ve already donated.

ART SHOW AND SALE QUEEN’S BIRTHDAY WAIHI
Waihi Art Club have been busy painting, as you’d expect. An exhibition at Queen’s Birthday Weekend is always a great way to see their latest efforts, and there’s the chance to buy whatever you see. There’ll be artists there painting and they’re happy to have a chat and there’s also a special feature of ‘The Eyes Have It’, which should be interesting. It’s in the Waihi Memorial Hall from 10 am to 4 pm Saturday to Monday of the long weekend, and a gold coin or more gets you in.

A MENTAL AND PHYSICAL CHALLENGE FOR A WORTHY CAUSE
Firefighters wearing full breathing apparatus will take on the Sky Tower Stair Challenge next Saturday, May 23, and two firefighters from Waihi Fire and Rescue are stepping up, all 1103 of them. Aiming to raise $1000 each for Leukaemia and Blood Cancer New Zealand Aaron Coxon and Dean Cochrane are keen to keep adding to that sum. You can go to www.firefightersclimb.org.nz, click ‘search for a firefighter’, then follow the prompts to them to donate.

ADDING TO THE DOWNTOWN SHOPPING EXPERIENCE TOMORROW
Waihi Lions monthly Market Day in and around the Waihi Memorial Hall tomorrow is always popular. Waihi shops on a Saturday morning are always bustling, and the stalls ad even more to the choice and selection available. Get ahead for Christmas, have a browse, think of that hard to buy for person, and remember something for you too. Grab something to eat at the excellent choice of cafes and restaurants, whether it’s a quick fill me up or a meal, downtown Waihi has an excellent selection of eateries.

THE PICS ARE OUT, CHECK THEM OUT
Go Waihi had the pleasure of giving away a Sony camera worth $1300 with our Snapshot Competition for Waihi’s Warm Up Party for Beach Hop. Wow! What a great bunch of entries. Award winning as far as I’m concerned, most of them are up on our website. Capturing a Waihi angle was the brief, and the fun, cars, people, atmosphere and a lot of Waihi was on show with the amazing mix of shots submitted. You done good! Well done to everyone who entered, and thanks for taking the time to enter. The judges had a fun time (not) choosing the winner, and Waihi’s Asse Bosch really got that vibe alive. Congratulations from Go Waihi and let’s do it again next March.

SKATES ON SATURDAY NIGHTS & SCOOTERS TOO
Take your own along or it’s included in the $5 entry, skates and scooters are what it’s all about every Saturday night at Waihi Event Centre with the Waihi Miners Inline Hockey Club Skate Nights. The wheels are turning between 6 pm and 8 pm when it’s time to let the kids loose to skate, scoot, jump and have a good time with music, games and ramps to use up lots of energy. There’s a skate shop for drinks and refreshments and all ages and abilities are welcome.
