Update June 19

Posted by Go Waihi on 19/06/2015

We’re counting down to the longest night in just four nights time, then it’s just the short haul to some more daylight at the end of the day, you know, when we like to be outside enjoying the great outdoors, with a BBQ going and the mozzies buzzing. Forget the last part but I am looking forward to going home in daylight sometime soon. With six months until Christmas, now’s probably not a bad time to start thinking about the occasional prezzie, just a thought. I’ve got a few invitations for you.

YOUR MATARIKI NEW YEAR DAWN VIEWING INVITATION
Happy New Year! The Matariki Celebrations marking the Maori New Year through the Waihi district wrap up with the Dawn Viewing on Sunday 28 June. An early start will be necessary if you want to be at Bowentown Heads at the southern end of Waihi Beach ready to start at 6 am. Meet half way up to the Pa site and hear about the history to Matariki, and a clear sky will hopefully allow us to watch the seven stars of Pleiades rise. It’s been great to see this unique New Zealand event being celebrated around our region.

A BAROQUE PERIOD MUSICAL FEATURE INVITATION
The Baroque period between 1600 and 1750 featured some very well known names in music. Handel. Bach and Vivaldi were all from this era, writing sonatas, cantatas, concertos and operas. Wella Tasma, Jillian Carey and Chalium Poppy will be performing a Baroque concert playing a variety of instruments including the treble recorder, cello, organ, flute, and harpsichord. On at Waihi’s St John Anglican Church at the top of Seddon St, opposite the Pumphouse tomorrow afternoon from 3 pm, it’s just $10 and $5 for under 17 year olds.

LAST CALL FOR APPLICATIONS FOR LOCAL ARTS FUNDING INVITATION
Just six days are left for you to apply for funding assistance for local art projects and initiatives with the Hauraki District Council. Individuals and local groups should get an application form from any Hauraki District Council Service Centre or at www.hauraki-dc.govt.nz to see what the criteria are. The basics are the community, including young people under 18, should be able to be involved and your project needs to support the diverse arts and cultural traditions of local communities. Cut off is 4 pm this coming Thursday 25 June so paint a pretty picture with your application, let the paint dry and get it in pronto.

OHINEMURI SINGERS 70TH ANNIVERSARY CONCERT INVITATION
They‘re warming up the vocal chords and getting ready to sing their hearts out for their 70th celebration, they perform regularly around the wider district and are always well received with a broad repertoire and enthusiasm overflowing. They’re the Ohinemuri Singers and they’re coming to Waihi’s Salvation Army Church hall on Saturday July 4. Starting at 2 pm they’ll serve up a delightful array of musical pieces, as well as birthday cake. It’s all included in the $10 entry, so grab a friend or two and head along for a good afternoon’s entertainment.

GET UP ON STAGE AND GIVE IT YOUR ALL INVITATION
Here’s the chance to let off some steam, and maybe win $200, and $1000 for your school for a project. We’re talking Waihi’s Got Talent with Waihi Beach RSA, Gold FM and Go Waihi. This is for kids who live or go to school in Waihi or Waihi Beach. It’s always great to see the variety of performances that the juniors, intermediates and seniors put on. The judges are looking for a variety of things like audience reaction, stage presence and how well you know your routine. Entry forms are at school offices, Gold FM and at here on our site, with heats starting in a few weeks and the finals night on Friday 21 August all at Waihi Beach RSA. It’s free to enter and each entry gets a meal voucher. There’s a challenge, what can YOU do?

GET YOUR SKATES ON, OR THEIRS, INVITATION
Waihi Miners Inline Hockey Club’s Saturday night skating is fun, fun and more fun. Music, ramps, games, refreshments and all you need to supply is the energy to go for it from 6 pm to 8 pm at Waihi Event Centre. They even have skates for hire so best socks OK? Or, if you prefer, go for the scooters, for hire or take yours along. Should sleep well after that!

BA5 SPREAD THE WORD – CHRISTMAS
We haven’t managed to get the Go Waihi Business After 5 with Goldfields Railway out of the station due to weather slowing repairs to the bridge, but I thought it was worth mentioning our next BA5 on Wednesday July 1 for Waihi business owners and managers is a bit of a midyear Christmas get together, so have a think about a $5 max gift, wrapped, suitable for him or her and we’ll get back with the venue next week.

HERE’S A THOUGHT: No-one has ever been in an empty room.
