Update July 8

Posted by Go Waihi on 08/07/2015

The school holidays are well underway, and if you’re visiting our neck of the woods, enjoy, relax, soak it up, get out amongst it, and do it all again tomorrow, just in a different order. One thing’s for sure, you won’t get bored. With July comes changeable weather, there’s no disputing that. And it also gives us the chance to take five, or maybe a little more, to have a look at things and to see where to from here. Whether it’s planning for summer, sorting a few things indoors because you can’t get out anyway, just reading a book, having a go with a new recipe or two, and the games, pull them out and have some fun!

IT’S NOT OFTEN YOU GET AN INVITE LIKE THIS
Check out these bras! That’s right, look closely, judge them, pull them to pieces, get up close, clap, cheer, and generally have a good time with Arty Bras 2015. Let your imagination go wild and think of what to expect with these categories; Naughty Nanas, Recyclables, Zoo Visit, Steam Punk, Gorgeous Karangahake Gorge and Fluro Frenzy. The mind boggles, and so will some of the bras with gents doing the honours on the ‘catwalk’. Check our website for ticket outlets, it’s just $15 which includes a light supper, and they’re licensed with eftpos. Doors at the Waihi Beach Community Centre open at 6.30 pm with the bras coming out from 7 pm.

WWI PLAQUES, SHIELDS & TABLETS TELL SO MUCH
These are found in schools, churches, halls and who knows where else. They say so much about our history. The New Zealand Society of Genealogists Waihi Branch’s guest speaker is Bruce Ringer, the Team Leader at Auckland Libraries South Auckland Research Centre. He’s published a number of articles on local historical topics and several books. From 1 pm on Wednesday July 22 you’re invited to hear Bruce’s talk at the Waihi Museum in Kenny St. $5 includes the talk as well as afternoon tea.

FREE CONCERT FOR WAIHI SENIOR CITIZENS
It’s funny saying free, but it’s true. Waihi Lions are looking after things and invite Waihi senior citizens along to the Waihi RSA on Sunday July 19 from 2 pm to 4.30 pm for a concert. And here’s a bonus, afternoon tea’s included thanks to the Waihi RSA. Need transport? Not a problem, contact Sonja on 021 414 556 and that’ll be sorted too.

SCHOOL HOLIDAY HAPPENINGS
Waihi Sport N Action has a number of events happening across the holidays. They’ve teamed up with the Waihi Blue Light team with some fun things for kids to do. There’s mountain biking today around Black Hill, and skating and indoor games next Tuesday and Thursday at the Waihi Events Centre from 1 pm to 4 pm, and it’s free.
TRAINS RUNNING ALL HOLIDAYS
Goldfields Railway train does three trips daily from Wrigley St in Waihi to Waikino Railway Station and back, and each way takes about half an hour. You can take the train one way and walk the other, bike the Hauraki Rail Trail there and enjoy the train trip back, or take the train there and back and just enjoy the experience (and memories). It’s not too expensive; the kids will love it as much as you and it’s something a bit different.

ANOTHER WEEK OF HOLIDAYS, AND ACTIVITIES
On Tuesday school kids are invited along to the Waihi Events Centre for skating and indoor games. On between 1 pm and 4 pm, it’s free and guaranteed to be lots of fun. Thursday next week and there’s more skating and indoor games, and yes, it’s free and in the Waihi Events Centre. Waihi Sport N Action and Waihi Blue Light Events have some fun afternoons sorted by the sounds.

IS YOUR NUMBER UP?
Waihi Lions Community Directory covers Waihi and Waihi Beach areas and it’s being updated ready for another print before Christmas covering 2016/17. For local residents it’s free to be in there. Now’s a good time to check your details are correct. Want to add a line, your mobile or fax? Just $20 does it. In business, then talk to Waihi Lions about advertising, and get your details into the big print. It’s the only one you’ll reach for, call Dave on 863 6988 to sort things.

GOLDFEST ENTERTAINMENT, WHAT’S OUT THERE?
Here’s your chance to get in touch and let Go Waihi know what you can do to entertain people. Goldfest could be an opportunity for you to perform, so get in touch and give us some background. Got a video, a demo or some examples? It’d be great if you can include as much info as possible. Variety is what we’re after so do get in touch.

GREAT PRIZES, GREAT FUN, GREAT EXPERIENCE AND GREAT TO WIN!
With $1000 for a school project and $200 for the winner of the junior, intermediate and senior categories there’s good incentive to enter this free competition. The experience is worth it, the excitement is guaranteed, the stage is set (well it will be soon) and we’re ready for whatever hits the stage with Waihi’s Got Talent thanks to Waihi Beach RSA, Gold FM and Go Waihi. Solo, duo, a group, singing, dancing, fire eating – no probably not a good idea, juggling, musicians, gymnastics, comedy, poems, hip hop, bands, magic … these are just a few ideas. Entry forms are at the Beach RSA, Gold FM and at here on our website and it’s open to any Waihi and Waihi Beach school kids.

WHIRITOA BEACH CARE PLANTING PROJECT INVITATION
Tomorrow at 10 am join the team in front of the surf club and help out with their second planting. About an hour later you’ll be enjoying a sausage or two on the barbie and think of the lasting effect of what you do. Suitable clothing for the weather, digging tools and gloves are about all you’ll need, and maybe a bottle of water to keep the intake up.

HERE’S A THOUGHT: Don’t jump to confusions.
