Update February 10

Posted by Go Waihi on 10/02/2015

Muggy and drizzle are two great words that are very descriptive and also very current with the weather patterns recently. Parched, brown, tinder dry are all words that are also prevalent at present until we get some decent downpours. Then watch the smiles on the faces change. Farmers will be grinning from ear to ear and the general public will more than likely be looking for that next fine patch to continue with summer. Still, weather’s weather so enjoy what nature provides, there’s no changing it ... unless you move and who wants to do that? We’re half way through February with lots of white tail spiders around this season apparently, not nice. And the white butterfly is a real nuisance too, with the caterpillars eating my seedlings, but not for long!

THE ULTIMATE CARD GAME? OPEN DAY, WANNA PLAY?
Waihi Bridge Club members meet up and play a couple of times each week in their clubrooms at 57 Union St. They’d love some new players to join them in the game they describe as ‘the ultimate card game’. Why not head along for their Open Day on Sunday 22 February from 2 pm to 4 pm. This is an open invitation for Beginners, no experience is necessary, Refreshers, those who’ve played some time ago and Experienced players of any level. They’ll be offering free classes in March so contact them now to find out more and register your interest. Try 07 863 8720 or 07 549 5005, they should be able to help you.

ATHENREE HOMESTEAD DEVONSHIRE TEAS ARE HOT
That’s what you’d expect when the scones are fresh out of the oven and then served along with jam and lashings of whipped cream. Sundays between 10 am and 3 pm through February you too can enjoy a Devonshire Tea on the platform of the station cafe. Take $5 for a guided tour of the homestead, and there’s the opportunity for a photo or three with you dressed in vintage outfits from the era. Take a picnic along too if you like. The Athenree turnoff is just off State Highway 2 at the southern end of Athenree Gorge, and they’re just a couple of corners on from there.

A BIT OF CULTURE, NO MAKE THAT A LOT
Waihi’s International Academy in Landlyst Road is hosting the Formosa Cultural Experience on Saturday February 28. Between 10 am and 3.30 pm you can immerse yourself in Taiwanese culture watching the Millennium Orchestra playing ancient traditional Chinese instruments, enjoy demonstrations of shadow puppetry, straw art, dough figurines and more, and you’ll have the opportunity to get hands on with this interactive part of the day. The contemporary Taiwan art exhibition will feature pottery, patchwork bags, photography and lantern art, and lunch is included. Contact info@waihiacademy.co.nz or Go Waihi about tickets.

A DIRTY WORD CALLED FUN, WITH MUD SUPPLIED
Waihi Scouts annual Mud Slide Fun Day is approaching. On Saturday 7 March grab $5 and get your old clothes and shoes sorted, along with some dry clothes for afterwards. Head south from Waihi on State Highway 2, about a k after the beach turnoff and turn right down the gun club entrance. There’s loads of free parking and between 9.30 am and 3 pm three slides with pools of mud await you. Add the mud obstacle course and rope bridge across the stream and you’ll be looking forward to showering and changing before enjoying some refreshments. They’ll have food and drink for sale and you can take a picnic along if you want.

SHOT OF THE DAY WINS AT WAIHI’S WARM UP PARTY FOR BEACH HOP !
Get snapping on Wednesday March 25 and capture the atmosphere, the Waihi feel and you could be the proud owner of a brand new digital camera from Sony, Beach Hop and Go Waihi. We’re keen to see what you come up with after a great competition last year where Rodney Franzoi took the shot that was hot. Waihi should feature somehow, apart from that it’s really an open book. More details are coming but we wanted to give you a heads up so you can start formulating what you want to get in focus through your lens.

CAN YOU HELP A LITTLE, LIGHTEN THE LOAD AND HAVE A BIT OF FUN?
All of the above is wrapped up in the title of Volunteer for Waihi’s Warm Up Party for Beach Hop on Wednesday 25 March. Marshalls for street barriers, a little crowd control at busy spots maybe, some assistance with stalls set up, definitely some down time to check out everything going on and lots of fun guaranteed. Add a complimentary hot cross bun and hot drink from BananaPepper and it’s not a bad deal I reckon. If you’re of fit mind and body (?) and keen to help for the day get in touch with Go Waihi ASAP. Cast your eyes down to the bottom of this column for contact details, easy.

HERE’S A THOUGHT: I’m willing to make the mistakes if someone else is willing to learn from them.
