Update September 30

Posted by Go Waihi on 30/09/2014

92 days and we’re celebrating a new year, again. 85 days and it’s Christmas Day. And in just 24 days we’re heading in to the first long weekend for a while. For some it’s a time to get away, for others, well we’re already here. I guess the back yard spring cleaning’s underway; the wind and rain have helped no end at my place. I’m just rearranging a few minor bits and trying to keep ahead of the weeds. While I and a few other early risers get used to a dark start to the morning let’s take a look at some of the things coming up in Waihi during Goldfest. (PS we also get to enjoy a little more relax time with the longer afternoons)

WAIHI’S NEW VISITOR ATTRACTION OPENS
Seven days a week at the top of Seddon St in Waihi the doors are open at the all new Gold Discovery Centre. This multifaceted attraction gets you hands on, gives you a blast, the chance to see how things were way back then, to push, poke, turn and even play two up! A good hour or so can easily disappear as you visit the different areas, including a theaterette with a difference.

GOLDFEST IS ABOUT FUN AND PARTICIPATION – SO SMILE AND GET INTO IT!
50 plus events through to October 31 surely has something that tempts your tastebuds. Want to celebrate Oktoberfest? The Blackmores XTerra Trail Challenge with short to ridiculously long courses a bit of you, or perhaps the badminton, croquet, skating or bowls days are worth giving a go. Art Waikino’s a good one for Labour Weekend, there’s gold panning for real gold and kids can try the Big Little Digger with Newmont Waihi Gold too. Throw in a Social Wine Club evening, the all time favourite Light Party, along with the multi generational Scavenger Hunt, the Big Gold Dig, Waihi Waterlily Garden’s Spring Opening and Family Day and you’ll need a break to get ready to take on even more. Programmes around Waihi and here on our website give you the whowhatwherewhenhowmuch, So what are you waiting for, get into it.

BOUNCE, SLIDE, EAT, DRINK, FLAME EATERS, PAN DRUMS, A BAND, FIREWORKS & MORE
Did I mention it’s all on Friday night, the lot, everything you’ve just read and who knows what else. It’s all free apart from the food and refreshments, not bad eh! Goldfest with a bang, hiss and a roar. Newmont Waihi Gold’s Thanks Waihi Family Fireworks Extravaganza starts at 6 pm with the fireworks literally going off just after dark. Around the Pumphouse at the top of Seddon St is the central spot, with good vantage points all around the Pit Rim to the 777 truck on the western wall. Bring your family and friends and make sure your pets, small and large, are well looked after with the fireworks.

MARKET DAY, TROLLEY DERBY & SKATEBOARD COMPETITION DAY
Get in early for the best bargains at the Waihi Market, take a break with some refreshments and then take another good look around the sales and specials both in stores and at the streetside stalls. There’s an interesting mix of stalls with who knows what for sale, definitely worth having a look. Lots of shops are having sales with specials and bargains both inside and out, and it’s an ideal time to get ahead with the shopping you know’s coming up. Park for free, as long as you need, right in the centre of town. Did I mention pacing yourself and taking a break at one of our many cafes and restaurants? It’s probably a good idea because just after midday Haszard St will be taken over by trolleys and skateboards - legally, well worth hanging around for. So ...

IT’S ALL ON SATURDAY TROLLEY AND SKATEBOARD LOVERS
Watching or entering make sure you’re at Waihi’s Annual Trolley Derby and Skateboard Competition tomorrow from high noon. Down Haszard St they’ll come, as many times as Waihi Lions and Waihi Beach Dirt Track Club can fit them in. Fun, excitement, laughter, a little fear maybe and definitely thrills and hopefully not too many spills, and throw in lots of pride, it’s all included. Get trackside and enjoy the action, cheer them on and wish you’d entered. Skaties have some great Element prizes on the line from Fowlers Surf & Fashion and everyone’s in with a chance at taking something away, just for getting into the day. Good luck to everyone in the Emergency Services Challenge, it’s always good viewing. Remember please stay behind safety barriers and ENJOY the ACTION!!

A THOUSAND REASONS, NO JUST A COUPLE, POSSIBLY THREE OR FOUR
The Stop Shop and Win $1000 Pot of Gold promotion through October in participating Waihi stores is a good reason to shop locally. There’s also the time you’ll save in travelling. Then there’s the hassle and price of parking, the petrol, and hey, whatever you’re after is probably right here, and at a decent price with friendly neighbourly service a bonus. Remember to fill out the form with your name and contact details, slip it in the box and you could be the proud owner of 1000 $1 coins.

HERE’S A THOUGHT: Those who throw dirt only lose ground.
