Update September 22

It’s a real mix of fashion statements with jandals and singlets then gumboots and beanies, they’re all getting a look in at the moment. Another school term comes to a close with exams for seniors when they return for term four. Goldfest is here, with things happening through the holidays and beyond. We’re set to lose a little sleep this weekend as we wind time forward an hour, then enjoy a later than usual sunset hopefully.

Programmes are here, there and just about everywhere very soon. There’s a fair bit on so have a read, and then get into it. A big thanks to MacMahons and Leicons, and everyone who’s got on board to put these things on, it’s fantastic to highlight everything that’s happening around Waihi. Lots of events are free; others just cover costs, so get into it. Rule number one for the young and the young at heart is to have fun!

Guess the number of Crunchie Bars with New World Waihi, Waihi Sport N Action and Sport Waikato events, Newmont Waihi Gold’s gold panning and big little digger are back, and there’s a quilt exhibit at Waihi Art Centre and Museum. First Steps have a gold themed Pirate activities day. Add in the $1000 Pot of Gold on offer and it’s time to get a programme and get involved.

The annual Go Waihi Trolley Derby and Skateboard Competition with Waihi Lions and Waihi Beach Dirt Track Club is next Saturday, October 4. Entries are coming in with a good mix of trolleys, and there’re young as well as shall we say ‘experienced’ entered. In the Skateboard Competition Fowlers Surf & Fashion has some fantastic Element prizes! Entry forms are at HDC’s Waihi Library and Service Centre in Rosemont Rd, Fowlers Surf & Fashion, Gold FM and here on our website.

Next Saturday leading up to all the racing there’s a Market Day in Waihi. Here’s the chance to get ahead for Christmas, and treat yourself as well, with some great sales in shops and lots of stalls selling who knows what. Add plenty of cafes and eateries to keep the hunger at bay and entertainment downtown and you may as well come for the day.

Friday October 3 the sky above Waihi will come alive when Newmont Waihi Gold says thanks Waihi, celebrating the 2 millionth ounce of gold. A family friendly lead up to dusk includes free kids rides and there’ll be food and refreshments available to buy. There are fire performers and the fireworks will literally go off just after dark. Look after your pets and head to the Pumphouse for a spectacular show.

Any day now the doors will swing open and Waihi’s newest attraction at the top of Seddon St will be open for business, 7 days a week. This unique experience combines the Gold Discovery Centre and the new i-SITE. During Goldfest locals will get a very special offer to hear, see and literally feel the stories through hands on displays, a theaterette and, well it’s better if you go and see for yourself.

THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK: Plasma is another matter.
