Update September 16

Posted by Go Waihi on 16/09/2014

Summer’s just around the corner and ... hang on, rewind that a little. Spring is about to begin officially and we don’t want to rush things do we? Then again for lots of people spring starts at the beginning of the month, so we get a little less winter, and more of the same changeable weather that always happens at this time of year, that definitely hasn’t changed. Here comes daylight saving, before you know it we early birds will be back into the dark first thing. Waihi’s Goldfest is coming up, a month long celebration around the region with fun being the objective, and participation is almost mandatory – and you almost have to take part too. By the way, make sure you vote, vote, vote; single votes from like minded individuals can make a difference, and so can not voting!

GOLDFEST, AN INTERESTING MIX OF EVENTS
If we were to say in the next month Waihi will launch a brand new unique tourist attraction, and feature an art exhibition, a national trail run event, a fireworks display, any number of sports events, a light party, gold panning and a chance to win the $1000 Pot of Gold, we’d be short-changing the region. There are lots of things being put on by some great groups and businesses, and a huge thank you for going to the effort. Soon it’ll be your turn to turn up and enjoy all the things on offer. We’ll add in a Trolley Derby and Skateboard Competition along with a Market Day, some great entertainment and a neat family day and we’re still skimming the surface. Programmes will be out soon. Fun is the name of the game, and giving things a go is paramount, for young and the young at heart. Yes everyone’s included in Waihi’s Goldfest from the end of this month right through October.

ENTER AND BE THERE OR BE SQUARE
Go Waihi’s Trolley Derby with Waihi Lions and Waihi Beach Dirt Track Club is part of a big day on Saturday October 4. It’s your chance to revisit the good old days, or to set some memories in place. All ages and abilities can enter, boys and girls, men and women. The open class gives you the chance to be a little more ‘creative’, and the whole thing is free! Entry forms are on line, at HDC’s Service Centre in Rosemont Rd Waihi, at Gold FM and Fowlers Surf & Fashion in Seddon St Waihi, or download one here. Don’t miss out! (Or maybe you should enter this ... see next item.)

ENTER – SAME DAY DIFFERENT COMPETITION
Go Waihi’s Skateboard Competition runs in conjunction with our Trolley Derby, same day, same time, same course, different wheels and forms of transport but both going for it and having fun. Thanks Fowlers Surf and Fashion for some fantastic prizes, you could win something cool, and enjoy the fun of cruising down Haszard St a few times. Sounds like a damn good deal to me. Entry forms are at the same places as the Trolley Derby above.

TO MARKET TO MARKET TO BROWSE AND BUY AT THE SHOPS AND STALLS
If you’d like a stall, you can download an application form here. A look around at what’s on offer with Waihi’s Market Day on Saturday October 4 should set you up for some great bargains, a good start to your Christmas shopping; a few ideas and probably one or two well deserved things for you. Shops will be holding sales with lots of specials and offers and you definitely won’t go hungry, whether you want a snack or something more substantial. We’re in the throes of sorting stalls that will add something a little different and even more variety through town. Yes, contact Go Waihi now.

NATIONAL QUILT SHOW WARMS UP IN WAIHI
Hot off the press this warming news that the Bernina Aotearoa Quilters Challenge “Growth’ will be on display at the cosy Waihi Art Centre and Museum in Kenny St. The heat was on entrants around New Zealand to interpret the theme ‘Growth’ and create a quilt for a national exhibition of innovative contemporary quilts. And here it is, from Monday, in Waihi. Free entry, but a gold coin (or more) donation certainly would help with their outgoings, you can wrap yourself up with this exhibition between midday and 3 pm Thursday to Monday.

A CHANCE TO WIN THE $1000 POT OF GOLD IS COMING BACK
Stop, shop and win; it’s that easy. During Goldfest every time you shop at a participating store in Waihi, you know, the ones taking part, you can enter to win the $1000 Pot of Gold. No long list of conditions, no repeat emails with the latest best deal, no send us all your details before we’ll enter you, just 1000 cold hard one dollar coins, simple. It runs through October and we’ll draw the winner on Tuesday November 4.

HERE’S A THOUGHT: Don’t waste the whole day, laugh at least once.
