Update March 6

Posted by Go Waihi on 06/03/2013

It’s been another week of warm temperatures and little respite from the dry conditions. It’s hard to believe school’s been back in for over a month, and daylight saving’s only got about 4 weeks to run. Then we’ll be watching the sun set around 7 pm! Variety’s the spice of life, and we’ve got a good mix of things happening around here to entertain both visitors and locals. Remember it’s the old story of supporting these things when they’re on and we’ll get even more events wanting to come here. From sports events to bands and family oriented activities we’ve got a great mix coming up. Let’s check out some of the line up.

Waihi’s hosting the first day of Beach Hop with our annual Warm Up Party on Wednesday March 20. It’s a great day for everyone, whether you’re in one of the hundreds of cars coming in the convoy, passing through on the day on your way, or just want to have a great day out with lots of live rock and roll music, dancing through the streets, some super sales in shops, loads of stalls with different products, food and refreshments a plenty through town and the Gold FM Drag Race at 12.30 pm. Prize giving’s at 2.15 pm where we’ll award the best hot rod and classic car trophies and also prizes for best dressed him and her.

The challenge has been laid down. Raid your mother-in-law’s wardrobe, she’ll probably help you. Ask your wife or girlfriend for a few tips on make-up and hair do and then grab a good looking fashionable but practical handbag you can use for a baton and you’re just about there. We’re talking the Gold FM Drag Race on Wednesday March 20. It’s the lunch stopper where everyone gathers to cheer you on, well you and a couple of brave mates. Teams of three blokes will be racing up and down the main street of Waihi at 12.30 pm for no apparent reason apart from the fact it’ll be a hoot and a half. The Te Awamutu Dairy Queens are making the trip north again, and Mitre 10 Mustang Sally’s are already looking at accessories. Don’t dilly dally, get an entry form at Gold FM and here on our website and start thinking about that outfit.

Humpty Dumpty sat on the wall, Humpty Dumpty was having a ball, all the children aged from 1 to 12 both girls and boys, were hunting hidden Easter eggs and making lots of noise. The Great Easter Egg Hunt with Waihi Beach Christian Centre is on again on Saturday 23 March at 11 am at Waihi Beach School. Cool Bananas will be performing; there’ll be face painting, candy floss, a sausage sizzle along with a giant slide and ... hundreds of chocolate Easter eggs to be found.

Waihi East School is turning it on to turn up the temperature in their school pool by having the old school Gala next Saturday, March 16. From 10 am to 2 pm you’ll be transported back to the good old days of white elephant stalls, cake stalls, the coconut shy and food galore. There’s a hangi, raffles and auctions, and Shona Laing performing on stage. Eftpos is available and you might win a prize by dressing up in beach hop theme. Fairground rides, carnival stalls and fire engine rides all help make up a great day for all the family to enjoy. Donnelly St Waihi East is the venue.

Saturday March 16th, it’ll be mud all over the place as Waihi Scouts raise funds to help them get to their Jamboree in January. Big slide, little slide and speed slide, a rope bridge, an obstacle course full of mud, horizontal bungee and face painting, not bad for $5! Remember a few extra $$’s and you can enjoy a drink and maybe a sausage off the barbie. There’ll be a wash down area and changing tent so take a change of clothes, sunscreen, something warm for afterwards and take along some old shoes for the ride.

This Sunday between 10 am and midday is muster time for the club. Anyone keen on joining a team’s encouraged to grab their birth certificate or passport and get along to register for the under 7, 9, 11, 13 and 15 teams. New players and families are welcome and they’re after a coach or two and managers as well. Contact Ash for details on 07 863 9226, or 021 1233 888. Go the Warriors!

Here’s a bit of a carrot to help get some help at Waihi’s Warm Up Party for Beach Hop. Volunteers are needed on Wednesday March 20. A local group unfortunately pulled out and that’s left us a little short to man the barriers and generally look after everyone on the day. Volunteers will get a bit of memorabilia to take away with a T shirt to mark the day, and they’ll be looked after with a coffee or tea and muffin from BananaPepper as well. We’ll even rotate everyone so you’ll get the chance to have a look around and enjoy all the action too. Contact Go Waihi as soon as you can.
