Update March 21

Posted by Go Waihi on 21/03/2013

Wet, rain, showers, damp, drizzle – all wonderful words for most and we got just a taste of it leading up to our Warm Up Party for Beach Hop in Waihi on Wednesday. Talk about a good time. We had hundreds of classic cars and hot rods sidling at an idle into town to park up for the day’s entertainment. And there was plenty of that with Tim and the Rockets, Gerry Lee and Al and the Wild Katz all pumping out the rock n roll through town. People dressed in theme added to the day, there was dancing in the streets and the Gold FM Drag Race was a laugh and a half. People were quick to take up the great specials and sales in the shops and stalls, and lots of visitors got to see what a great town we have. Waihi Rocks!

There are a variety of things that make up a big day like Go Waihi’s Warm Up Party for Beach Hop. Firstly there’re the crowds who turn up to enjoy the fun and entertainment. Thanks heaps, it just wouldn’t be the same without you, REALLY! Then there are the volunteers like the Waihi Lions and all the individuals who answered our SOS to help with barriers and the like. You rock! Without your help the roads wouldn’t be able to be closed. HDC staff who quietly go about their business with road closure, keeping the streets tidy and making sure everything ticks behind the scenes, it’s all so important so thanks guys. To Roland at Waitete Restaurant and Delwyn and Paul at Diamonds On Seddon, your continued support with the best dressed competition over the last five years is really appreciated. And then there are the sponsors whose financial assistance is immeasurable. All the costs add up quickly, so a huge thanks to MacMahons, Leightons and Newmont Waihi Gold for your support of this fantastic community event. It does a lot for Waihi hosting this sort of thing and having your backing is truly appreciated.

Once upon a time you couldn’t find out much from someone after they’d died, but that’s not the case with Lyn Williams. Lyn’s an historian who’s written a series of articles called ‘The Dead Tell Tales’, and she’ll share how she goes about choosing her subject, researches and writes these articles. For just $5 you can join the Waihi Branch of the NZ Society of Genealogists this Wednesday at 1 pm at the Bridge Club Hall in Union St to hear Lyn and enjoy a cuppa as well.

Waihi Beach Christian Centre is going to hide hundreds of Easter eggs for kids from 1 to 12 to find. It’s their fourth free family Giant Easter Egg Hunt, happening at Waihi Beach School tomorrow. Things get underway at 11 am and finish after the Cool Bananas perform, faces are painted, the giant slide deflates, the sausages have been sizzled and all the eggs have been found. Awesome!

Ever wondered if you might have diabetes but never got around to being tested? Well here’s your chance to change that. Waihi and Waihi Lions are supporting diabetes screening with free clinics for anyone who’d like to be tested. On Easter Monday there’s free screening at United Church at Waihi Beach, and the following day, Tuesday 2 April, the trained volunteers will be at the Countdown car park in Waihi in their modified van. It’s an ideal time to be tested even if you feel you’re in good health. They’ll also be offering blood pressure checks so why not take five minutes and visit them.

They’re at it again; making plays and having a good old laugh. And you’re welcome to join the Waihi Drama Society and laugh along too when they present their first play for 2013 starting on Wednesday April 10 at The Theatre in Boyd Rd. This time they’re doing a madcap comedy called ‘Old People Are Revolting’. It’s about, well, old people who are fed up with being ignored and relegated to the sidelines of life, so they’ve decided to show just how dangerous they can be, sounds interesting. Get your tickets from Monday at United Video in Seddon St Waihi, and remember there’s no eftpos for ticket sales.

Were you at Waihi’s Warm Up Party for Beach Hop on Wednesday? Did you take any photos? If you were, and you did, then check through them and pick your five best. Send them to Go Waihi either by email or on a disc by Friday April 5. Go Waihi has a Sony 3 D Blue – Ray Disc Home Theatre to give away, and it could be yours. Pick your pics that show the fun, the vibe, the feel of the day. What was it that stood out? We’d like to feature some on our website too, so go for it and good luck.
