Update February 28

Posted by Go Waihi on 28/02/2013

New Year’s Resolutions are coming under scrutiny, suntan lotion is getting low, like the water levels around the region, and summer ain’t over yet. We haven’t seen too much rain, and I feel for the farming community with the extra costs of feeding out and loss of milk production. Our next lot of visitors continue to arrive, those without school age children. Welcome, and I hope you enjoy your time in our region.

Go Waihi’s Business After 5 March Meeting is looming up on Wednesday 6 March. We’re going to find out about another business based in Waihi that has links all over the country, and overseas as well. Scottsdale Tours are based in Dean Crescent, and they’ve invited Waihi business owners and managers to tour their tours base. Limo’s, self drive trucks, a bus or three and tours going all over the place are what makes this business tick. If you’re a Waihi business owner or manager and would like to go, just email me.

Raising funds is what it’s all about; and what a great way to do it. Waihi Scouts have a jamboree in Fielding next summer, so they’re doing the hard yards now. Hopefully not too hard, but the yards are definitely part of the equation, well metres probably. They’re bringing back the mud slide, actually three, and anyone’s welcome to slip and slide their way to the bottom, and for just $5. The changing tent’s provided, along with an area to wash down. You’ll need old shoes, a change of clothes, hat and sunscreen and LOTS of energy. Parking’s easy at the back of the gun club, and it will be well signposted on the day. Oh, there’s an obstacle course, swing rope and horizontal bungee, and food and refreshments will be available. (Saturday 16th March)

The Waihi Lions are ready but we’ve had a group pull out unfortunately and I need around 10 more people to help man barriers on Wednesday 20 March at Waihi’s Warm Up Party for Beach Hop. If you can help out we’ll make sure you get some time to soak up the atmosphere as well. Please contact Go Waihi so we can make sure the roads can be closed for this event.

Here’s your invitation to get some ring-ins and have a laugh and a lot of fun with Gold FM’s Annual Drag Race on March 20. Let’s be honest, it’s not often we get to see teams of three blokes, dressed in their mother in law’s finest (or similar), racing up the main street of Waihi for no apparent reason. Sure there are prizes but I really don’t think that’s the reason people enter. It’s the camaraderie, the feeling of freedom only a skirt or dress can provide – not that I’d know, the pleasure of bringing a huge smile to all the bystanders, and well yes, the prizes might just have a little to do with it. First and last home usually get something, the gaudiest, biggest, er, hairdo, saddest and funniest story … it doesn’t really matter; we’ll find an excuse to give most who enter something to remember the day by. And we’re not talking photos either. Enter at Gold FM or you can download an entry form.

Waihi’s Warm Up Party for Beach Hop is, well, warming up! The trophies for best hot rod and classic car are being created, the bands are sorted for Rosemont Rd, in front of the Memorial Hall and in the Pumphouse, entry forms for the Gold FM Drag Race are out, shops and stalls are gearing up with some fantastic bargains and the prizes for best dressed guy and gal are looking good. Now what does that leave, hmmm, YOU!! Remember the date, Wednesday March 20. A big thanks to our sponsors too – MacMahons, Leightons and Newmont Waihi Gold!!

THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK: If nobody measures up, check your yardstick.
