Update February 22

Posted by Go Waihi on 22/02/2013

Here comes the weekend and a busy one around the region again. We’ll get a good dose of visitors streaming out of the big cities to enjoy a bit of our lifestyle, and why wouldn’t you want to. Fifteen minutes in the car around here gets you through more than three sets of traffic lights and an on ramp! Beaches, bush walks, backyards the size of a quarter acre and blimmin’ good shopping and cafes all add up to a great place to call home. Events and things to do are important, and feature a lot around here. For example, why not get along to some of these things coming to a town near you called Waihi.

Don’t miss this one! Tomorrow the gates of the International Academy in Landlyst Rd, Golden Valley in Waihi swing open and inside, and outside too, there’ll be performances by Taiwanese artists who’ve flown out especially to perform for us. There’s the Cultural Performance featuring musicians playing ancient Chinese instruments with ink art being created while the music plays. Martial art demonstrations and glove puppetry, alongside the lion dance will fill the day between 10 am and 3 pm. Tickets include lunch and are available at Take Note in Paeroa and Gold FM in Waihi.

This’ll bring back some memories, and create a few new ones too. Waihi Scouts are hosting their Mudslide Day on Saturday March 16. Take a change of clothes, some old shoes and sunscreen and get set to get down and dirty. There’ll be a mud water hole, a speed slide, and there’s one for the littlies too. Add a rope bridge, mud obstacle course, horizontal bungy, face painting and a sausage sizzle – you can cook your own if you want, and help them raise funds for their Jamboree. Where, just south of Waihi on State Highway 2, a km past Beach Rd turnoff. It’ll be well sign posted, and there’s plenty of parking.

The Gold FM Drag Race at Waihi’s Warm Up Party for Beach Hop is the ideal opportunity to ‘tick it off the bucket list’ of things you’ve always wanted to do, but never had the opportunity (or balls). Dress in uncoordinated colours, frivolous frocks, weird and wonderful wigs, oh and remember a handbag for your team of three or you haven’t got a baton. Entry forms are on our website, a load of laugh’s are guaranteed, and so’s a prize. It’s all for fun, free and great for team building. Get your business involved. And remember, winning isn’t everything with prizes for the slowest, wackiest and ... well we’ll make some more up as we go.

By my calculations that’s March 16, the date set for Waihi East’s School Gala, with a capital G!! So much to see, so much to do, so little to pay for a great day raising funds for some heating for their school pool, you’d be silly to miss this one. Reminisce about the good old days when there was a coconut shy, cake stalls, raffles, face painting, sideshows and carnival rides, mussel fritters and hangi, fire engine rides and more at your old school gala. Then get along from 10 am and you can relive it all, with a few extras like entertainment on the stage including Shona Laing, bouncy castles and silent auctions. You’ll be in bed before the kids after this one.

Dance classes have started with the Waihi School of Dance. Demi-plies, arabesques, chasse, pas de chat, pirouette; Mum was a ballerina and ballet teacher so I know the terminology – just not what it means, or how to do it. Classes for five year olds to adults are held at St John’s Anglican Church Hall on Tuesdays and Thursdays, and new pupils are welcome. Call Carol for details on 07 863 7292.

We can’t fit it all into one column so keep an eye out here for details of more things on the horizon destined for Waihi and the district.

Waihi’s Warm Up Party for Beach Hop on Wednesday March 20. Take the day off, havesome fun with hundreds of classic cars and hot rods parked up downtown, bands playing through the streets and sales and specials through town in shops and at stalls. Dress up and be part of the day, you could win the best dressed guy or gal competition.

The Parenting Show with Pio’s on Sunday March 3 at Waihi Beach School thanks to Waihi Beach Christian Centre. It’s free and kids get fed and entertained while you have a laugh and learn how to build an awesome family.

The Giant Easter Egg Hunt is on Saturday March 23, just before Easter with Waihi Beach Christian Centre. Thousands of eggs, a performance by the Cool Bananas, face painting and candyfloss should get a good crowd along.

Arty Bras is back on July 6, this year with Waihi Police Blue Light Ventures.’ Cups’ will runneth over with joy, well bright, colourful, crazy designs, and a great night’s entertainment featuring big bold brawny blokes modelling these creations will have you wanting to enter. Now there’s a thought.

HERE’S A THOUGHT: When it comes to giving, some people stop at nothing.
