Update - February 9

Posted by Go Waihi on 09/02/2012

Here we are at the end of another short working week and I’m already missing the idea of having this Monday off. Any bright ideas how we can make this more of a permanent arrangement? We’ve certainly seen the weather turn around with some pretty decent days recently, and I hope they continue for a while yet. Those who held off with their holidays are on a winner. It’s been a busy time around our region with not just ‘local’ travellers but also the international visitors coming through too. We hope you enjoy your stay in our piece of paradise, and you let everyone know to visit when you get home.

WE’RE WARMING UP FOR OUR PARTY
You can bet it’s going to be fun. Waihi’s Warm Up Party for Beach Hop kicks things off with a hiss and a roar, as 400 to 500 hot rods and classic cars descend on Waihi. We close Seddon St off to fit as many in as possible. Then we close Rosemont Rd and the side streets to fit even more in. We have prizes for the best dressed male and female, the best hot rod and classic car trophies, we have the original Gold FM Drag Race, and then of course there are the three bands playing through town, the Hop Stop and Shop competition with Sony, sales and specials through the shops and stalls and heaps more I’ll tell you about as the day approaches. All we need now is you and your friends and we’ll have a humdinger of a time I’m sure. A quick big thanks to our sponsors Newmont Waihi Gold, MacMahons and HWE Leightons for supporting this fantastic day.

STALL AND YOU COULD MISS OUT
With the Waihi Warm Up Party for Beach Hop comes the opportunity to have some stalls to complement the shops and what they have on sale. Yes, sale! Most of the shops will have some great bargains and specials, and we’d like to include some stalls along the streets to add even more to the atmosphere. But we can only fit so many in, so if you’d like a stall on Wednesday March 28 get in touch and I’ll send out a registration form and we’re just about there. We’ll have a good crowd in town so if you want to do some fundraising, here’s your opportunity. We’re after diversity, things that the shops don’t already sell. That way you get to sell more, and so do the shops!

DON’T BE A DRAG, BE A DRAG RACER
With Waihi’s Warm Up Party for Beach Hop comes the opportunity for you to search out the wardrobe for something totally unsuitable for a bloke to wear, and then to wear it as part of a team of three fellas in the Gold FM Drag Race. It’s one of those things you need to tick off the bucket list, and Wednesday March 28th is crunch time. Entry forms will be available here soon, and you can get in touch with us anytime to register your interest. Great for businesses and anyone who can talk a couple of mates into having some fun, so go on … just DO IT, I dare you.

COMMUNITY CHOIR IN WAIHI
We have a lady who’s involved with Waihi Glee and the Waihi Central School choir, and Angela is now keen to start an adult community choir. Practices will be starting on Monday nights from the 20th. Head for the Waihi Central School Hall for a start at 6.30 pm, running through to about 8 pm. Loosen up your vocal chords for some fun in harmony, and remember to take $5 to help cover the hall costs. More info can be had by calling Angela on 027 662 8826. And remember Waihi Glee is still after more teenagers, both boys and girls, so talk to Angela if you’re keen or pop along on Tuesday from 5 pm to 6.30 pm to Waihi Baptist Church Auditorium.

LOOKING FORWARD TO LOOKING BACK
The Waihi Branch of the New Zealand Genealogists are about to embark on a tour of Waihi Cemetery. This year marks 100 years since the Miners’ Strike of 1912, and they’ll be looking at gravesites of some notable personalities of the time and telling their stories. You can dress in1912 style if you like. Meet at the cemetery at 5.45 pm for a 6 pm start on Wednesday February 22. A gold coin donation would be appreciated. To register email waihi@genealogy.org.nz.
