Update - December 9

Posted by Go Waihi on 09/12/2011

Here comes the silly season! And that’s just the weather! We’ve had four seasons over the last week or so, and I’m hoping we’re going to get some settled weather coming up. That’d be good for the Kopu Bridge opening this weekend. And it would be fantastic for Waihi’s Christmas Market Day and Parade tomorrow too. Details are below, so join us, do your Christmas shopping through the morning and enjoy our Parade at 1 pm. Now, back to my New Year Resolution, funny, it’s the same as last year!!

I couldn’t think of a longer title to let you know you’re personally invited to our Christmas Market Day tomorrow morning. Starting at 9’ish and rolling through over lunch we’ve got an eclectic mix of stalls to add value to our burgeoning shops with all their Christmas and summer specials and sales. Street side stalls, rides for kids of just about all ages, a jazz band and duo performing through town, local clubs and groups fundraising, raffles and food and refreshments galore. Wow, I’ll be there with a description like that. And hopefully you and your family will be too. It’s Christmas after all. Come early for the best bargains.

Well it could be if you’re there. Tomorrow at 1 pm you’ll hear the pipes. That’s the signal that the Waihi Christmas Parade is about to get underway. Littlies at the front (under parental care please), smiles all around, and a good view close up’s virtually guaranteed for everyone. We’ve got another great mix of floats, with more entries coming in as I write this. If you haven’t entered yet, turn up tomorrow and we’ll get you signed off before the start. Remember safety first, so please stand back for the floats. Seddon St will be closed from midday to 2 pm. Dress up, you might win a prize. And as always with Go Waihi, rule number one is to have FUN!

Wrap up tomorrow with a fantastic show by Waihi’s Dynamik Hip Hop Krew. It’s their end of year Dance Show, and talk about energy, they just love it, and so will you I’m sure. Head for the Waihi Memorial Hall for a start at 6 pm. Adults, it’s $5 for you, and those who aren’t an adult, it’s $3 for you, and remember it’s cash at the door. I’m going to get puffed just watching.

Waihi has some new Christmas lights that have just gone up through the downtown CBD, and they look fantastic. Trees festooned in multicoloured lights, lamps down the centre of town lit up with festive lights as well, and then of course the Poppet Head at the top of Seddon Street can now be seen from quite a distance with its new lights. It’s definitely worth coming out one night after dark to have a look at. And if you’ve got lights decorating your place, let us know about them and we’ll try to let others know where the displays are this Christmas. It’s all adding up to another great Christmas.

We’re looking forward to a busy time in and around Waihi over summer, and we’ve got several things on the way. I’ll keep you up with the play as long as I’m told about these events, so send through all the details. I’ll also add things onto the town website that Go Waihi looks after, that’s www.waihi.org.nz. Here’s a sneak preview. Art On the Grass with the Waihi Arts Centre and Museum has more market days over the next two months, the Jalopy Dust Up is back early January, there’s Art Waihi’s Three Day Exhibition mid January, and the Waihi Craft Show over Waihi Anniversary Weekend (that Auckland tags on to) is shaping up nicely too. That’s just for starters, so as they say, stay tuned and we’ll give you some darn good reasons to visit the Waihi district over summer. Did I mention the fantastic beaches at our back door, and the brilliant walks in and around the Karangahake, Waihi and Waihi bBach areas? Oh well, maybe next time.

HERE’S a THOUGHT: Why can’t we just spell it orderves??
