Update - December 23

Posted by Go Waihi on 23/12/2011

A couple of sleeps and we’re there, Christmas! To some it takes ages, for others it comes around sooo fast. It’s about catching up with family and friends, watching the faces of the youngsters first thing in the morning, treating yourself - just a little, and hopefully having time to relax. Whatever you’re doing over summer I hope it includes the above and a few other things too. Unwind, tick off what you’ve achieved, look forward and make a few goals for the coming year. It’s all part of the season, whether the New Year’s Resolution lasts or not, well we’ll leave that for another day. With loads of great bands and music on through summer here’re a few other things coming up around the Waihi district for you.

COMPLIMENTS OF THE SEASON
The Go Waihi committee wish you a very Merry Christmas, a Happy New Year, a fantastic summer, and a successful 2012. We hope you catch up with your friends and family, and get to have some time to relax. If you’re on the road, safe travels. Enjoy the trip and take your smile along, people love it. The best’ve the festive to you and yours.

CHRISTMAS DINNER ALL WRAPPED UP
You are cordially invited to enjoy the Open Door Christmas Dinner starting at 11.30 am this Sunday at Waihi’s St James Presbyterian Church Hall in Moresby Ave, Waihi. There’s no cost, it’s free, and open to everyone. A good time’s guaranteed, and you’ll be treated to one heck of a Christmas dinner. Share Christmas with others and maybe make some new friends. If you need a lift or would like to help out, call Margaret of David on 07 863 8316.

IT’S GROWN BUT WILL BE MOWN
Waihi Art Centre and Museum’s art and craft market Art On the Grass is on this Wednesday between 10 am and 4 pm. WACMA’s in Kenny St Waihi, and they’ll have local artists working on site, along with entertainment and artisan food for you to enjoy while looking at all the paintings, fibre art and pottery that’s on display, and for sale.

BRAIN DRAIN AT WAIHI BEACH?
I hope that’s not the case with the Lions Club of Waihi Beach Trivia Quiz Night on Friday January 6th. Starting at 7.30 pm at the Waihi Beach Community Centre, there’ll be raffles, a lucky ticket draw, and lots of checking and double checking of answers. It’s $10 a person with teams of up to 8, or you can be put into a team, and there’ll be refreshments for sale. Tickets are available around town, and on the night.

FUN DANCE PROJECT OPEN INVITE
There’s something in the wind for dancers of all ages, male and female from 10 years old and up to be part of. FUN will be the most important thing, and you’re guaranteed to enjoy this project. A few practices and I’m sure you’ll have it off pat. Then it’s just … well we’ll leave that for another day. Call Hayley on 07 863 7510 and be part of the FUN.

ONCE THE DUST SETTLES
That’s when we’ll find out the winners. It’s called the Jalopy Dust Up, and Waihi’s turning it on again at the Waihi Beach Dirt Track on Waihi Beach Rd on Saturday January 7th. Racing cat and mouse style around the most picturesque track around (check out the coastal view!), the whole family will enjoy the hot rods, classics, pre 65 cars and more that go hell for leather around the track. With food and refreshments available, all you’ll need are a few dollars, some sunscreen and hat, possibly an umbrella, perhaps a blanket or chairs and a few hours to enjoy the racing.

MID JANUARY ART SHOW

Waihi Art has booked the Waihi Memorial Hall from Friday the 13th to Sunday the 15th of January, and they intend to fill it with top local art for their Summer Exhibition. There’ll be contemporary, abstract, representational and pastel works on display, and for sale. They’ll also have artists there demonstrating their skills, together with raffles. They’ll be open from 10 am to 4 pm daily.

BACK FOR 2012
The Rotary Trust of Waihi’s Car Boot Sale is back on Sunday January 15th starting at 8.30 am weather permitting. Look for the flags flapping in the Waihi Memorial RSA car park, bottom end of Seddon St and you’re one step away from getting some great bargains with all sorts of bric-a-brac and treasures, and some of the freshest produce and pickles, cakes, jams, and more. For a site just turn up with $6; and that goes back into our community via Rotary projects.

ART & CRAFT HEAVEN
Waihi hosts this over the Anniversary Weekend, January 28th to 30th, at Waihi Memorial Hall. There’ll be displays by two quilt groups, the Embroidery group, spinners and weavers along with displays of scrapbooking, dolls, floral art and more. Throw in some raffles, sales and bargain tables and a guest quilter, teacher and national exhibitor and you’ve got another event definitely worth checking out.

HERE’S A COUPLE OF THOUGHTS:

If you look like your passport photo, you probably need the holiday.
You only live once, but if you do it right, once is enough.
