Update - December 1

Posted by Go Waihi on 01/12/2011

Into the last month of 2011 we go, and what a busy time ahead. Sun, surf, sand, barbecues, Christmas, New Year … where are we supposed to fit in work? Oh well! Senior school is winding up for the year, and it won’t be long before the juniors follow suit. Santa’s getting pretty busy visiting everywhere for the Christmas Parades, and I hear he’s doing a bit of shopping while he’s here too. Here are some of the things coming up, and there’ll be more to come I’m sure. You can’t say there’s nothing to do in our neck of the woods, gorge, beach and countryside. And check out our new Christmas lights through town - after dark of course!

FREE GLEE VARIETY SHOW
Friday 2nd December, Waihi Glee members are performing a mix of items from solos, duos and small groups to the whole troupe at their end of year show. From 7 pm at the Waihi Baptist auditorium you’ll be treated to a real mixture of musical styles, from the Beatles to Bruno Mars. They’ve been together 7 months and these 12 talented 12 to 18 year olds would love you to get along and support them. Take the family and some friends; you may end up wanting to join them.

ALSO ON THIS FRIDAY
Christmas at historic Athenree Homestead starts at 7 pm and for two hours you can enjoy festive food and drinks along with musical entertainment. I hear they’re trucking in a piano that has a bit of, no make that a lot of history with the homestead. It’s $25 a ticket and you’re invited to dress in vintage or semi formal for the evening. Ring 07 863 4363 for tickets and details, then head to 360 Athenree Rd, just off State Highway 2, Athenree for what I’m sure will be a very enjoyable night.

AND NOW FOR SOME MORE VARIETY ON SATURDAY
Yes Saturday 3rd December, sees two shows with Carol Hayden’s Waihi School of Ballet, the first at 2 pm with another at 7 pm, both in the Waihi Memorial Hall. You’ll get to enjoy the story of the Wizard of Oz with the ballet pupils, while the jazz and contemporary pupils are dancing to the music of Katy Perry, Lady Gaga and others. It’s always popular so be early. Tickets at the door are $6 adults and $4 for students and children.

LAWNS MOWN AND READY
Art On the Grass is an innovative idea that Waihi Art Centre and Museum has come up with and it’s on Friday 2nd December. Head for Kenny St between 10 am and 4 pm to see artists at work, and take advantage of all the great bargains. There’ll be artisan food, entertainment, and a great variety of fibre art, paintings and pottery at their first art and craft market. Could be good for a Chrissy pressie or two with lots for sale! By the way it’s weather permitting.

AND ON SUNDAY, HERE’S A STARTER FOR YOUR DAY
Plants, produce, homemade goodies and goodness only knows what other treasures await you at this Sunday’s Waihi Rotary Trust Car Boot Sale. It all kicks off at 8.30 am, as long as the weather’s OK, and it regularly runs into the afternoon. It’s different every time and if you want a site, just turn up with $6 and you’re away. Rotary Waihi redistributes these funds back into our local community.

9 DAYS AND COUNTING DOWN
Santa’s getting pretty excited, along with Rudolph, and I hear a few elves are wanting to come this year too. We’re talking about the Annual Waihi Christmas Parade next Saturday, December 10th. This is preceded by our Christmas Market Day from 9 am downtown right through the morning. So make a day of it, do lots of your Christmas shopping with all the stalls and bargains through the shops and then wrap up with the parade at 1 pm. It’s close up and lots of fun, and we’d love to see you here. Add some music through town and rides and slides for the children and I think we’re going to have a good time!

LAST CALL FOR STALLS
We love adding value so we’ve organised for any streetside spaces left by shops to be filled with stalls selling different things to the shops. Flax weaving, Maori pottery, hand knitted toys, face painting, balloons, raffles, seashells made into fashion accessories; these are some of the stalls already booked. Maybe you’d like to raise some funds for your group or club. Contact us at Go Waihi ASAP and we’ll see if we can add you into the mix.

HIP HOP HOORAY
Waihi’s Dynamik Hip Hop Krew’s 2011 Dance Show’s on to wrap up Saturday December 10th. From 6 pm you’ll be entertained by some very talented children and young adults with their end of year performance. At the Memorial Hall it’s door sales only, adults are $5 and children $3. This will be a full on energetic performance.

HERE’S a FEW THOUGHTS:

  • An optimist laughs to forget, a pessimist forgets to laugh.
  • I may be inconsistent, but not all the time.
