Across the next few weeks there are several events the public is invited to be part of with the Maori New Year celebrations.
On Friday June 16 there’s a Hikoi going from the Pumphouse through town and back to the top of town for lunch and waiata, or songs. Waihi schools and the public (yes, you’re invited to be part of this) are combining at lunch time Friday with the hikoi, or walk, through the centre of town. Starting at midday at the iconic Pumphouse with a korero or talk, the hikoi will be heading through the CBD at 12.15 pm to the bottom roundabout, crossing the road and heading back up to the Pumphouse singing waiata, or songs, along the way. They’ll finish with kai, or lunch, and more waiata at the Pumphouse.
Wednesday 28 June sees the Community Celebration in the Waihi Memorial Hall with performances from most of the schools starting at 5 pm.
The Dawn Viewing has been postponed until Sunday, July 2. Why don’t you join those gathering just before dawn at Bowentown Heads, ANZAC Bay, to welcome in Matariki, the Maori New Year? The stars were used for navigation and also helped with the timing of the seasons. You’ll get some history about the Pleiades star cluster that Maori base their New Year on and hopefully get to see the star cluster too. And head for Waihi Memorial Hall for the Community Celebration this Wednesday starting at 5 pm and enjoy some great performances by a variety of local schools and preschools.
There’s also aa Tapuwai Tournament at Central School on Tuesday 4 July along with Waiata (singing) and Te Reo evenings. Tapuwae’s such a neat game. It’s a traditional Maori ball game where players pass the ball aiming to knock the block in the middle of the two sides over. Lots of teams will gather at Waihi Central School on Tuesday to play for the Tapuwae Trophy. You’re welcome to go along and watch this fast paced, action-packed competition and cheer the teams on.
Remember you’re invited to take part in all these celebrations.
