Construction of the pit rim walkway is currently focused on the eastern extension of the track. Once this new section is opened, the walkway will encompass almost the entire Martha open pit, from the Cornish Pumphouse, clockwise, to Roycroft Street.
As part of Waihi's GoldFest celebrations, the walkway, including the new eastern section, will be officially opened to the public on Sunday 12 October. Everyone is welcome to join the walk, or come along just for the opening.
It could take an hour and a half to two hours to complete the circuit, which is approximately five kilometres long, with some hilly parts. Walking shoes are recommended. The path is pushchair-friendly and with assistance, wheelchair-accessible. The opening will take place rain hail or shine. Bring along the sunblock and the water bottle just in case!
Newmont Waihi Gold's External Affairs team will be on hand on the day to answer questions and provide assistance as required.
