Xmas Parade 2008 - Float Registration Form (PDF)Xmas Parade 2008 - Information and Rules (PDF)This Saturday’s 2008 Go Waihi Christmas Parade in association with Harcourt's Real Estate is just a few sleeps away. There's a great mix of floats registered, from vintage and classic cars, Troupe Waihi with their stilt walkers and roving entertainers, including mime and mask performers, a very large puppet, rubbish tins and a big pram, to the Wild Whip Man, the Golden Girls Leisure Marchers, hip hop dancers, businesses and school entries, it’s definitely going to be exciting and colourful.
Wet or dry, the parade starts at 1pm from the corner of Moresby Ave and Seddon St, heading up Seddon St before turning around at the roundabout on the corner of Mueller St and heading back down town again.
Seddon Street will be closed between 12 noon and 2pm, and people are reminded to please make sure their vehicles are clear of the closed off area in the centre of town well in advance to allow for the parade, and people that will be lining the streets. Santa has emailed to say he’s looking forward to returning to Waihi, one of his favourite places, and he did mention he loves big waves from children and parents too.
Go Waihi is pleased to have Harcourt's on board as the major sponsor again, giving us the opportunity to award prizes to float entrants for the best float, funniest, best effort, most original and most Christmassy. There are also some prizes for children, both on floats and in the crowd, who dress up in the Christmas spirit.
Also a big thank you to the Waihi Lions, who are manning the closed off areas and running their very popular raffles again this year.
Leading up to the parade, shops will be open with a variety of sales and specials, together with a good mix of stalls up and down Seddon St with everything from flax goods, candyfloss, handcrafts, antique treasures and jewellery, to silk skirts and tops, jams, pickles and preserves, sausage sizzles and cake stall, native plants … the list keeps growing.
Safety is very important, and parents are asked to keep a close eye on children, and please stay on the footpath as the parade goes by.
With a fantastically fine day forecast (we hope) it would be a good idea to wear a hat and have a good layer of sunscreen on, and remember, Go Waihi's rule No 1 is to have fun.
