Waihi's Beach Hop Warm Up Party is happening again and wheels are starting to turn.
The three bands are booked for downtown and in the Pumphouse, we've got the best dressed male and female competitions on again, and trophies for the best hot rod and best classic cars that Newmont Waihi Gold's Glen Grindlay and Hauraki District Council Mayor John Tregidga will choose again.
We have another Drag Race up Seddon St, a great prize up for grabs for shoppers in town, and cars, cars, cars and more cars throughout town.
We are giving away a Sony Handicam to one lucky shopper at the prize giving starting at 1.30pm too. All you have to do is shop in town that week leading up to Wednesday, come downtown on the day and drop off your entry form, and then be there to see if your name is called out (see below).
There will also be lots of things for sale, and on sale, shops with sales and bargains galore, together with a wide range of other products and goods with stalls through town. If you've got things that the shops don't sell then
get in touch, book a stall site and be part of a fun day in town.
STOP, SHOP & DROP
The Go Waihi Beach Hop Stop, Shop & Drop promotion goes like this. Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday – that’s the 22nd to 24th - stop and shop in town, get an entry form, fill it out and then between 10.30am and 1.30pm on Wednesday drop your entry into the 1963 Buick station wagon prize mobile, at the top of Seddon St. Then be at the prize giving in front of the Memorial Hall at 1.30pm to see if your name's drawn to
win the Sony Handicam.
Simple!PRESS RELEASE!
The 2nd Annual Beach Hop Warm Up Party is heading for Waihi on Wednesday March 24th, and even more cars than last year are expected. The party begins at about 10.30 when the entourage of vehicles from Whangamata arrives en masse and fills Waihi central. As Waihi is a hub, with hundreds of cars passing through heading for Beach Hop, there'll be any number of individual and groups of cars that will stop off to take advantage of a great day in town.
"Last year was the great unknown, how many cars would we have here, and how many people would turn up?" said Go Waihi Coordinator Brian Gentil. "This year we've extended the closed off area so we can fit another hundred or so cars in, it was that popular. Once again, we must thank the generosity of Newmont Waihi Gold for making this possible. Without their support, we wouldn’t be able to put on such a party for the people of Waihi and all the visitors that flock to town to check out an amazing array of classic cars and hot rods".
The Retro Party is back entertaining the crowds throughout town – Gerry Lee outside the Sterling Tavern, and bands Johnny Stash in front of the Waihi Memorial Hall and Tim and the Rockets up in the iconic Cornish Pumphouse. There'll be rock and roll dancing on the streets, and like last year, prizes for the best dressed male and female from Waitete Restaurant and Café and Diamonds On Seddon, together with unique trophies for the best hot rod, chosen by General Manager - Waihi Operations of Newmont Waihi Gold, Glen Grindlay, and Hauraki District Mayor John Tregidga's choice for best classic car.
Retro music will fill the airwaves on 96.4 Gold FM, and the very popular Gold FM Drag Race is back again. "This was a great spectacle last year with some very burly men turning up in their Saturday night best", said Mr Gentil. "Hand bags are a must as they’re the baton for the three man team event, and you'd just look silly without one in the individual’s race. As for wigs, fish net stockings and make up, the imagination ran wild last year, so what the outfits are going to be like this year is a bit of a worry. Entry forms are out now, and we've already got several entries. If you’d like to enter in the fun of the day, get in touch with Go Waihi on 07 863 3030 or
email us for an entry form."
Sales and specials throughout the town play a big part of the day, with shops really getting into the swing of things, and there are over 30 stalls already booked for the day to add to the flavour. Organisers have added rides like the chair-o-plane and a hot rod slide for the children, so there’s plenty of entertainment for all ages. Local cafes, restaurants and eateries will have plenty of food and refreshments making sure no-one goes hungry, and there’ll be candy floss available too.
Beach Hop organiser Graeme 'Noddy' Watts says all three of the vehicles they’re giving away will be on display in Waihi. "It was such a great day last year, how could we not come back for the 10th anniversary celebrations. It’s such a fantastic way to kick things off."
Go Waihi, in association with Beach Hop, has organised a shopper’s prize this year, where simply by shopping downtown in Waihi, and placing your entry form on the day in the 1963 Buick Stationwagon at the top of Seddon Street before 1.30pm, you could win a Sony Handicam. This competition runs from Monday the 22nd when shops open through until 1.30pm on the day when the prize giving starts outside the Waihi Memorial Hall. You must be there to claim the prize if your name's drawn.
Seddon Street will be closed from 8am to 3pm to allow for all the vehicles and entertainment in Waihi's CBD, and the bus stop has been moved to outside PGG Wrightson’s in Mueller St between those hours.
